vivoactive hr not starting the optical sensor for CIQ apps

Hi Guys

I have a report from a vivoactive HR user about and issue with the HR sensor

Here is part of his mail.

"I took a short run today and tried some.
During the first 2km I used the Garmin app without problems. The sensor seems active all of the time (green light on)
Then I used the Genius app. After a short time the HR did not show and the green light was off. It came back for two short times.
I also lost GPS three times, the running was in the woods surrounding our village. I normally don't loose GPS signal but it could be just bad luck.
Then again a short run with the Garmin app. I didn't wait for the HR to show but it came visible after a minute or so. No GPS problems.
And at last a short distance with the Genius app. After a short while the green lights went out and according to the watch I died of heart failure."

This was the second time he tested the app for me and in the first one he had the same results.

The strange part of the report is that the optical sensor turns off. Im my app I never disable the sensors. I enable them all when the app starts and thats it.
Another important point is that during the workout, eventually the sensor turned on, he picked the hr info and turned off again.

Based on the description seems that the sensor is not being enabled by the app, and the sporadic readings are happening when the device turns on the sensor to acquire the 24/7 hr info of the user
Or maybe the app enables the sensor but the reading for the 24/7 monitoring is incorrectly turning it off
(I'm just guessing here)

This can be a bug in the firmware, or can be a device configuration.

The core part of my app is running in other devices and I tested it in fenix3, vivoactive (non hr) and fr235 real devices, so I believe it's not an issue in my code.

I still dont have a vivoactive HR myself to test it, so I would appreciate if someone could install my app and see if the sensor simply turns off after a minute or two.

Anyone else received this kind of user complaint?

Cheers,

Robinson

    Firmware link

Hi is it possible to get a link for the 2.65 beta firmware release or can I find it directly in Garmin express when I connect my watch ?
Sorry if it's a stupid question. But I'm not a developer - I just want to be able to use Genius Wrist with the premium features :-)

The firmware updated to 2.7 yesterday. The heart rate problem still exists.

Actually, 2.71 (that last digit is important - if it's not zero, it's beta).

It's working fine in my apps (it did in 2.65 too).

What is your code in relation to the sensors? What's your call to setEnabledSensors() look like? Are you not seeing the HR when the .fit gets uploaded to GC?
  • Update: so this morning I recorded about an hour, and watched the HR. It took maybe 5 minutes to start getting HR data, but was fine after that (the first 5 minutes is also missing in the .fit). The last few times I recorded with 2.71 I did not see this behavior. So maybe there is something odd with 2.71, but it's not consistent.
  • Is there a way to update to beta without garmin express?

eg, a button I can click on garmin connect to sync it up?

You can not update to beta with garmin express.
You have to put the gupdate.gcd from the beta zip in the garmin folder, when vahr is connected to pc. Then release the connection and beta is installed

    Ah, thanks for that.

It is such a shame that I can't do it through the web interface on garmin connect... recently I've had very little time to sit at my computer at home (where my charger is) and because the HR has its own charger (instead of using a standard micro USB, which I understand) I am often unable to plug it in wherever I am.

If I had the mind to bring the charger to work, or buy a spare one, it might be easier lol.

I will try and remember to do this after the gym tonight... there are a few apps that I am eager to use that don't pres

firmware updated to 2.80. Wrist HR sensor drops after 1~2 mins. But it works well with external ant+ HR sensor.
  • What app are you using? the WHR has been working fine for me in my apps as well as the native apps.
