interaction with activity tracking app / access to accelerometer

is it possible to write an app, with Connect IQ, which will update the data used by the native activiy tracking app of the vivoactive/920 xt/epix/... watches ?
let say I write my own cycling or running app, how to reflect the calories burned during workout with my own app into the native activity tracking app ?

is it possible to access the accelerometer data sensor, I only see the ant+ sensor but nothing on the accelerometer ?
  • As far as I can tell, the answer to both questions is no.
  • We are still evaluating access to the accelerometer data.
  • hi Kyle, what about activity tracking data ?, will it possible in future release to update those data so that the activity tracking will show the added steps/calories/distance from a third party app ?

This data is still gathered, even when a third-party app is running. If you activate a FIT recording then the data will show up in the FIT file as well. What cannot be done is modifying the step/calorie/distance values, as these are calculated by the system.
  • Hi Kyle, is the data gathered for all type of activity (biking, swimming, running) ? meaning the "activity tracking" will use speed, HR, etc..., even if it is trigger by a third party app ?
for running/walking I can imagine it will work, but I'am surprise it would work for third party application for biking or swimming !
so can you , please , confirm it would work even in those biking/swimming by third party apps.

    thanks
  • Steps won't be counted for biking (maybe if you put the watch on your ankle they will) or swimming (at least I've never gotten steps from swimming) since the watch can't pick up steps in these activities. When a third-party app is running, the activity tracking will continue running as it normally does when in watch mode.
  • Hi Kyle, for swiming/biking/any other sport third party except running/walking, I was thinking about the calorie computation. Because Activity tracking tracks steps but also compute calorie, so I was expecting that "activity traking" will add up the calorie consuming during any workout even if it is not about running/walking.
So is it the case ?

    thanks
  • The calories burned will be included in the Activity.Info ActivityMonitor.Info objects, as long as we're able to calculate the calories burned for the current Activity. For instance, if I start an activity on my vivosmart without a bike speed sensor or an HR monitor, then the calories burned will not be available as they cannot be calculated. But if I'm wearing an HR monitor then calories burned will be available.
  • understood, calorie computation is mainly based on HR, so if your activity(even a third party apps) connects to a HR monitor then calorie will be automatically computed by the system.
    thanks.

Vivoactive counting steps while I'm swimming

I can see how my vivoactive is counting steps while I'm swimming. It must be a software bug or maybe I have a defective unit. What do you think?
