Java JDK still needed?

In Programmer's Guide -> Getting Started it states:

To use the Connect IQ SDK on all platforms Oracle Java™ software development kit version 7 or higher is needed.

But it seems the latest Connect IQ SDK does not require JDK anymore and is fine with the JRE.
Could you clarify this?

I don't think the JDK was ever required. You don't need to compile java source at any point, just execute java programs.

The eclipse plugin used to add tools.jar from JDK to classpath when calling monkey compiler, but not anymore I guess.

This is correct. The compiler's JAR file has always been built as a runnable JAR so we updated how the compiler was invoked from the plug-in.

You should only need a JRE installed, not a JDK.
