smartphone API?

yesterday garmin updated firmware on edge 520 and edge 1000
in the changelog they mention:
◦Added support for Connect IQ smartphone API for CIQ developers.

does somebody knows what this means?

i just checked on edge 520 and "notificationCount" or "phoneConnected" still dont work

as edge devices currently only support datafields, the "Communications" toybox cant be used either..

im missing something

This is most likely part of the necessary groundwork for the Communications module for apps and widgets. As you know these application types aren't supported for those devices yet, but functionality like this typically is only really available when all of the necessary pieces are in place.
