Activity tracker distance question

A user has reported...

Distance displayed is not confined to steps only. Eg 1900 steps recorded with 1 mile distance; If I subsequently go for a bike ride of 12 miles, the distance shown in the activity tracker adds the cycling distance to the steps covered ie 13 miles. So it looks like I have covered 13 miles in 1900 steps.

I trust this is how the activity tracker data is supposed to work?

I believe that all of the ConnectIQ devices (confirmed on the fr920xt, vivoactive, and fr630) have a steps widget that indicates the steps, calories and distance traveled. How does the data on that widget compare to what is coming back from the ActivityTracker?

The distance I see on both the native "activity tracking" widget, as well as the distance I see in ActivityMonitor in CIQ (both Info and History) always includes the distance from recorded activities. I can see where cycling would look a bit odd, as you can go a good distance, and get few or no steps for the distance. (va and 230)
