Data field: write debug output to log file on device

Maybe I missed it in the docs: in a data field, how do I write output for debugging purposes to a file on the actual device?

The simulator does not work for me when I try to work with training plans and still has lots of issues playing back fit files, so I would like to test on an actual device.

If you have a store version of the app, try uninstalling it before you put the sideload on the device, Otherwise the prg may have the 8 character store name, and the txt file needs to use that name.

you can use system.println() in your code

create a file named the same as your prg file but with txt at the end and place it inside the /garmin/apps/log folder

System.println() it is case sensitive

Hi Developers,

I have a problem related to this post.

Issue: My logfile stays empty...

Environment: Running datafield in MARQ2 Captain.

Steps I did:

- "Build for Device" of sample app (https://github.com/fabiobaltieri/ciq-nrf-blinky) for device MARQ2 and build mode "Debug"

- Put the PRG to \GARMIN\Apps folder.

- Created a txt file with same name than PRG to the \GARMIN\Apps\LOGS folder

- Assigned the datafield to a activity, and let the datafield run (works on device)

- Checked the logfile. => Empty

At least at startup of the datafield there should be one call of System.println, but expected more..

The guideline (https://developer.garmin.com/connect-iq/core-topics/debugging/) only talks about Apps, does this logging also work for datafields? Is there any other pitfall or hint

thanks for fast reply.

A store version app was not installed some time ago but removed. But I gave this a try:

- So I installed the store version (again),

- afterwards de-installed the store version app again.

- tried again my Debug version.

Result: Log works!! => maybe there was really some old instance information in the system.

So solved, thanks a lot!
