Hi,

Someone contacted me because he can't install my Monsters app, which has a size of 263Ko, but he can install my Zombies app (206Ko). He has a Vivoactive.
My question is: how much storage do the watches have? Where can I find specs?

There is a limit on the total space that ciq "things" can take on the watch, imposed when something is installed from the app store. (IIRC, it's 512k on the va). On GCM, if you go to GarminDevices>(device)>Connect IQ>Manage Storage, you'll see "available storage" left for CIQ.

While not releated to your problem, you'll also see it mention "Available Slots". There is a limit of 16 "slots" for CIQ things - You can only have a total of 16 CIQ watchfaces, widgets, data fields, and watch-apps.

So, the limits are 16 different CIQ "things", and combined, they can take at most 512k. The va has about 4mb of "mass storage" space, and that's for CIQ things, as well as .fit files. For a FW update, about 2mb has to be free.

I think the same 512k limit is on other devices too. On a 230, I see 380K available and 10 free "slots", and adding up the sizes of what's installed it's a bit over 120k that's used.
  • My Constellations app size was about 450 KB's and it had problems with Vivoactive devices. Then I limited the colors I use to CIQ color palette which is about 16 colors and declared the colors I used for each image in drawables.xml file. Now it only takes 130 KB with many constellation images in it. I did the same with some of my other apps and they have less memory and storage usage now.

So consider building your images (at least large background images) with less colors and declaring them in resource files.

ok, thanks for all your answers. I'll see if I can reduce a bit the size of my images.

Just an FYI, my kids love the app. :D

Actually, it's my son (8 years old) who gave me the idea of the Zombies & Monsters app :o Everyday he looks at my watch to see if I defeated the monsters :D:D
