Could the FR920 and Fenix 3 could be upgraded to allow the developer to choose which 16 of the 64 are used for the palette? (the same way that GIFs allow you to choose up to 256 colors out of millions) That would allow an apparent improvement in on screen graphics without changing the size of the frame buffer.
(all of a sudden I am thinking about the demo scene and how they manage to squeeze amazing graphics out of hardware that wouldn't normally be capable of it)
I would imagine this would need to be restricted to things that have full control of the screen (watch faces, widgets, and apps, but not data fields)
The colours are specified by hexadecimal digit pairs in a 6 hexadecimal digit number - 0xNNNNNN
Only some of these colours can be shown on the device and if not the OS chooses the closest number that can be displayed.
The constants define colours that can be displayed on all devices.
I suspect that, at the moment, the best display supports four levels of reflectivity/transmissibility for each of the light primary colours red, green and blue.
So all the reds would be 0x000000 ( black ), 0x55000 dark red, 0xAA0000, medium red, 0xFF0000 the lightest red.
On the simulator the Fenix 3 can only show black and two reds, the Fenix 5 and Vivoactive HR can show black and three.
The same for each of blue and green.
This gives 64 colors for the latter two devices.
I wrote a view to investigate this that iterated through each permutation of possible RGB values ( in steps of 0x55 to the appropriate hex 100 power ) to display a colour grid.
The simulator seems faithful to the number of colours that can be displayed on different devices.
