How do I extract a widget from a device?

I have an F6X Pro Solar which is about to be RMA'd. I'm transferring data to the new device, but I can't find the widget I use most (and it has disappeared from the store).

I am familiar with side-loading and use it to move watch faces which aren't technically compatible with the F6X.

I can't find this widget, however. I found the name of the .PRG in GarminDevice.xml, and grepped the string in a few data files. But I can't find the actual .PRG, and the data files are too small.

There is clearly some nuance here I'm not getting- help? Where can I find this file?

Fenix 6X Pro Solar, 15.71, all CIQ etc at most recent beta versions.

On some devices, other prg files are being hidden and encrypted in the same way that music apps have been for a while.

Interesting. I wasn't aware, but it does make sense. Do I have any hope? Are there any typical locations?

Copying an app from one device to another isn't really a great idea in general. And like music apps, I think this was done for security. The apps are tied to the device.

I can see why you are interested in doing that but there are other problems being able to copy app files around.

- If it's a paid app, copying might work as a work around from paying for the app.

- If the app doesn't work on a particular device or version of IQ, copying the app could produce support calls Garmin doesn't want to have to deal with.

I appreciate the responses. This was a sun/moon rise app which graphically indicated the direction of the next event. In the widget list it identifies itself as SUNMOON. Aside from the directional indicator (the important part for me, I camp a lot), it's similar to other apps here.

It's not an obvious candidate for obfuscation, but clearly it happened :)

If it was a paid app, I paid. If it was suggest-ware, it's likely I did; I do with the apps I use a lot. In any case, the dev has left the Garmin ecosystem, I have no way to get in touch, and I have to RMA the watch.

That's likely the end of the story, but I do appreciate any thoughts.

Garmin obfuscates everything. It's much safer and reliable to obfuscate everything than have (complicated) rules for whether or not to obfuscate.

Garmin has no idea what each of the thousands of apps does or whether it's paid or not.

I'm not suggesting you, personally, are trying to circumvent anything (I said what wanted to do was reasonable).

That’s more or less what I’ve tried, I know the PRG name, but I can’t find it. There are settings files, however.

Definitely seems like I may be out of luck. Tough downside to this RMA.
