Position - Info - Heading

Hi,

In the simulator, when listening to position changes, the heading is always 0, even if I try Simulation -> FIT Data -> Simulate Data or load own FIT file. It works well on real Fenix 3. The question is: is the heading calculated and reported on all Connect IQ devices with GPS when moving, or are there devices for which it always returns 0? I understand that on devices with compass it uses both compass and GPS depending on speed. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks,
David

The simulator ALWAYS shows north (0). I've just gotten used to that and tend to check heading out on a real device..

The va and 230 that I have both use GPS for heading (they don't have an internal compass), and the heading is correct, as long as you are moving. When you stop and sit, they do tend to bounce around a bit, but they are never stuck at north (0). I think this is the same for any device that uses GPS only for heading.

Keep in mind that heading is in radians, and needs to be adjusted if you want degrees, as otherwise, it will be a small number that could like like north based on what you're doing.

    Hi jim_m_58.
Thank you very much for the info.

  • separate compass heading and gps heading needed !!!

To add on to what Jim said here are the thresholds for the switch between compass and GPS heading. This will be for devices that have the GPS and compass heading. This is just a little more information in case you need it.

The thresholds for switching between compass and GPS heading are the same for all products.

We switch from compass to GPS heading if

    a. “The current compass calibration is bad AND user velocity is greater than 1.5mph”
    or
    b. “User’s velocity is greater than 2.0mph”

    Hi Shannon,
Your answer b. tells me that I can not sit on a boat, read the cruising speed and at the same determine the direction to a special point of interest. Isn't the any way to read both headings separately with my Quatix 3????
    Thanks

I am not 100% certain, but I think the heading that is provided from the sensor module will give compass heading even while moving.

That's what I expected but when I tested my App while driving a car, the compass heading was not different to the position heading.
Anyway, I will check my source code and test again.
