Paid for Applications; Activation Codes

I don't see any API stuff for supporting activation codes and payment stuff.

Is there any conventions to follow here?
I naively kind of thought payment and paid for applications would be supported via the Garmin Connect IQ store.

Note I have not gone through the process of uploading an app to the store yet so don't now if this functionality is handled then.

How do people go about getting paid for downloaded apps?

  • If using the honesty box / donation approach in reality how many people using your app actually make a donation?

my own experience would be that over a period of 2-3 years with upwards of 20-30k downloads. (downloads includes updates and what not, so the 20k number may be inflated), I think I can get myself a case of 24x bottles of beer.

    Yeah.. that's the reality.

  • Micro Payments must be enabled manually - by contacting paypal... And I'm not sure if a business account is necessary, but yes, I have one - but only because I do need API access and that's only available for a business account. I don't see hidden fees (I just upgraded to the default business account though, I don't need more) and I use this account for donations only and nothing more...

One thing though is, that you at least need a company (I do write android apps as well and I have a one man business for that) for a business account.

  • oh, you need to be a company? a LLC to be able to do it. registered. darn.

  • You can always easily implement the payment handling through KiezelPay (kiezelpay.com). They handle everything for you so you don't have to. I know Kristof, the owner, since 2015 and he's a nice guy.

  • I wouldn't be wild about someone taking 25% of the income for just providing this "service".

Requesting donations has worked very well for me over the last few years.

  • Of course it's up to each and everyone here what he/she decides to go with but - based on own experience - donations generally don't work as well as normal payments. And given how much times it requires to put together a proper watchface I personally would never rely on just donations.

There are watchface devs who earn more than just a few of dollars a day with their faces. And they wouldn't if they would rely on people being generous to do just donate.

But again: everyone can decide what's best for themselves.

  • Hi Nikeow, did you upgrade to the Business Account in the end? Find any downfalls in doing so? I've just contacted PayPal through online chat about micropayments and they've confirmed that you need to upgrade to Business. Do you know if you still have the ability to receive fee-free friends & family payments on a business account?

It's a shame PayPal dont just have a tiered fixed-fee amount as standard, as 30p + x% is brutal on a £1 app!

    Thanks,

    Stu
