Newbie - how to launch SDK manager in Linux please?

Please don't laugh at my simple question - I am just trying to follow the instructions on "Getting Started". I run Linux Mint18.3 on my laptop so I have downloaded the Linux SDK manager, and now I am stuck at point 2 "Launch the SDK Manager".

I navigate to the folders (bin and share), but can't do anything with any of the files inside. How do I "Launch the SDK Manager" please?

Can you please try launching the SDK manager from the command line. This is something that is going to be fixed in the later versions

just run the executable from the command line <path/to/sdkmanager/bin>/sdkmanager let me know if it throws any error

To run it I have tried typing 4 different things:

sdkmanager run sdkmanager /sdkmanager and ./sdkmanager

The final one returns: error while loading shared libraries: libpng16.so.16: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

So then I tried: sudo apt-get install libpng16.so.16

And got: E: Unable to locate package libpng16.so.16
E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'libpng16.so.16'
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libpng16.so.16'

these are "old" library which should be installed after downloading it separatly (see some other thread for howto)
