Develope datafields for BLE / Bluetooth 4 and 5 hardware on FR945 / F6XSP / 1030 Plus

The devices you list all support BLE with CIQ.  If you want to see if CIQ can see your specific device, I have an app for that:

BleScan.  It will allow you to see devices that are advertising that can be seen in CIQ.

As far as BLE in a data field, there's an example of that in the SDK - the NordicThingy52CoinCollector.  Using fit contributor, you can add the data to a fit file.

Excellent! I downloaded the app, and indeed the device showed up. When clicking on it, 13 pages of various signs came up.

So if I understand you correctly, this then verifies that the device can transmit data to datafields (not app), on the Garmin headunit, and written into the .fit file for post analysis?

When you run BleScan, you see a page for each separate BLE device near you that is advertising.

So you want to check the UUID (bottom two lines on each screen) to find your device, or it may be adverting a name.  The sample screen I show in the store is "Thing17"  - a Thingy52 that I named

So in your case, you're looking for one of the 13 pages.

What this indicates is you can "see" the device.  It doesn't test if data can be written to it or read from that.

To read or write, you need to know characteristics and you can see some of that by way of something like Nordic's nRFconnect app (you can use the phone version).

It really doesn't matter if you are writing a DF, widget, or watch app.  The access is pretty much the same, and the NordicTingy52CoinCollecter sample app shows how to do that in a DF.  The other NordicThing52 sample shows it being done in a device app.

Doing BLE is kind of complex, so may not be a good first project, unless you understand BLE to begin with.

Thanks Jim - that was very insightful. So the device I have uses Thingy52.

How much time do you think it would take to make a simple datafield that could display and record the data from the device, roughly speaking? No need for anything fancy beside that.

It really depends how how well you know CIQ, and how much info you have about the BLE profile.

I have very little experience with programing CIQ, so I think I would have to rely on someone to assist in making it...

I have all info about the BLE profile from the manufacturer. They sent me the documentation. Based on that, what estimates are we looking at for a skilled person in CIQ?

Skilled in CIQ, and BLE in CIQ, and having the needed HW - both the sensor as well as what's needed for the SIM to talk to the sensor, the basics could be done in a day (just a guess).  But there are other variables, like how easy it is to test things i the real world.
