Alarm from a datafield on bike computer

Hi, I am am writing a data field that displays the user's blood glucose level and I want to set off an alarm when the glucose level reaches a critical level. Previously I have used playTone and vibrate and although that works fairly well on wearable devices it does not work with bike computers, like the edge series. I don't know if they even support vibrate but in any case the rider will have a hard time to notice the vibration or hear the sound when the device is attached to the bike.

I was wondering if there are other ways to draw the riders attention, for instance toggling the back-and foreground colours. I haven't tried yet so don't know if it works, but maybe there are other ways that are better? Any ideas?

There is no vibrate on edge devices, and if you try to use it on an edge, your DF will crash.

Doing something visual is probably the best way to go, and with a complex DF you got a few optionns. Just display something in the DF, Do soint like switch the background to red, display a message instead of the normal data for say 5 seconds, wait 5 seconds and repeat, etc.

Thanks Jim, I will check for has :Vibrate and use vibrate patterns on wearable devices supporting it, and for bike computers I will try to set background to red.

We added the ability to post alerts from a data field with the 3.2.0 SDK. The documentation on the website has not been updated for the 3.2 SDK yet, but you can find information on the API by looking at the documentation.

Assuming you've got the 3.2.x SDK installed, and have configured it to be the active SDK using the SDK manager, you can click Connect IQ > API Documentation and then browse to WatchUi.DataField and look for showAlert.

Note that this functionality will only be available on devices with 3.2.x support, so you should make sure it is there before trying to call it either by doing a has check or by setting the minSDK version in the manifest to 3.2.0.

Yes I was going to mention that, but I'm not sure any edge devices have 3.2 yet and the SDK/Devices doesn't support 3.2 on any edge devices either.

Agreed. No edge devices support 3.2.0 at the moment, but it should be possible to develop the feature to work on a simulated wearable with 3.2.0 support and have it just work when the edge adds support.
