How to use Simulation Playback....with sample Activity Tracking app

Sorry for basic question, but still trying to ramp up on Connect IQ....I'd like to see an App working in the simulator with some data being represented. Looking through the Sample Apps, I chose "ActivityTracking" as a likely looking App.....I'm not sure what that does, but since it has a "Steps" and "Floors" field shown I imagine it ought to update those. I have a FIT file exported from a real run I did with my real watch, so I thought I ought to be able to run this sample app in the Simulator and see it increasing the Steps as it plays through the FIT file...

Please correct me if I have misunderstood what is achievable!

I cannot figure out how to get this to work in the Simulator....I've been clicking the button to try to start the Activity, and selecting Simulation/FIT Data/Playback File...but I'm not seeing any changes in the data shown on the Simulator.....I think I'm doing somethings basically wrong.

Any help please on how I can run this App in the Simulator and have it run through the data from my FIT file?

  • In the sim, under Simulation, go to Activity Monitoring, Set Activity Monitor info.  There you can set things like steps per min, floors, etc.

If you want to see the basics of activity recording, look at the recordingSample.  With it, again under simulation, Fit Data, then use simulate Data or play back one of your own fit files.

Thanks, I get the first part of your response, I was able to use the Activity Monitor input to simulate Steps/Minute as see the data fields updating in the Activity Tracking sample app....happy with this progress :-)

But still not clear on how to playback a FIT with this app, when I try, it doesn't affect the Step Count?

Also, not so clear on the second part of your response, I would like to see how I can load a FIT file and observe that data on the Simulator....I loaded the RecordSample app, and can see it offers a means to record an app (i guess writing a FIT file) but don't see how that app can allow me to load a FIT file?

  • I don't think that steps are usually recorded in .FIT file.

I mean... they _can_ be recorded... it just isn't a statistic that generally _is_ recorded. Things like speed, distance, cadence, location and heart rate are more likely.

So it is highly possible that your .FIT file isn't updating step data because it has no basis on which to do that.

So I think, to test you'll either need to set the steps manually and see them change or side load it and work from there.

  • With the record sample, you play back a fit or use simulated data.  It really doesn't do much other than start recording it's own fit file once you press menu.  You can modify it so that it displays distance, or whatever, but shows the structure for recording..

HHmmm you're probably right, there may not be steps in it, but it was a 4.5 mile run, so I would expect to at least see the distance changing, but it just sticks at 0.00mi even minutes after starting the Playback File....no worries, I'm just trying to understand enough about the bits I think I'll need to put together my app, and I think I have enough understanding for now of this bit.....thanks
