Are there any more really useful links like this? And, if so, where?

Hi,

While browsing one of the old-timer’s DF (definitely old as “using the new settings feature”) I stumbled across this link: https://apps.garmin.com/settingsHelp

It redirects to a fantastic wiki page that I will now include for my user instructions.

But if there is one, surely there are more?

What other really useful resources exist but are unknown that I can use to help people to use my DFs, apps and WFs?

Is there, for example, one that explains how to use a DataField so I don’t have to continually explain on email (when they _include_ an email) why they cannot see the DF they have just installed?

Any useful customer-facing links in this thread will be gratefully received!

Thanks,

G

  • Seems I've never has an issue with any user just clicking on that link.  Not one that didn't understand it.

Seems a permalink would make no difference.  Years ago I proposed a link to the App Settings "how to" right from the store, but it never happened.  That to me would be a better solution than a permalink.

I proposed that as well as a user level FAQ with things like "What do I do if says I need to update my firmware to download an app?"

Basically a "help" in the app store.

  • Yep, you were right back then. It would indeed be better to offer “User help” as part of CIQ generally.

In my view, it is a battle that needs to be continued. Its absence is a glaring case of negligence on the part of Garmin.

  • I mean, if I were a marketing bod in Garmin, I’d probably prefer a help section in CIQ than force developers like me to resort to this level of desperation in product listings:

This is a DataField which means you need to put it on a DataScreen for your activity to use it. Please read Garmin's instructions for your device. https://www.google.com/?q=garmin.com:add+to+data+screen

  • The reality is, even if it was there, I doubt it would be used much.  It's hard enough to get some users to read the first two lines of an app description. Slight smile

It might cut down on some of the "contact developer" messages, but ones like that are really easy to address with a link or a short explanation.  And I'm saying this as someone with about 50 apps in the store.

  • Have you looked at the Garmin product support page.  They have user instructions for many of the things you are looking for when using the CIQ app store app at this link.

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?productID=616398&tab=topics

You can also select ConnectIQ as the product and find many of the same instructions.  It can be better, but it does exist.

  • AlphaMonkey confirmed today that the email issue will be fixed in the next release of the CIQ app store app.

  • AlphaMonkey is the team lead.

    Regarding the permalink....

The problem with posting any link (permalink or other) on the details screen of the app is that it will be hidden on the 2nd part of the screen (at least in the app version)...

To make matters worse as it's not obvious that there's more at the bottom of the screen there are very few users that drag the screen up and down (why would they?). (I assume this design will also make it's way to the web version to get a uniform feel).

The call to action in the detail screen is completely focused on the Download button. While the download button must have focus of course, for me the design of the detail screen is a poor design as it does not offer anything more on first sight that what the "list screen" is already showing (I already saw a preview of how the app looked there and I could already have downloaded it from the list view without asking for more details).

If I'm asking for details I'm expecting to get more details and not the same info just rearranged in a different format.

  • AlphaMonkey is the Big Banana in Monkey C! Slight smile

If you look at "News&Announcements", many of the posts there are from AlphaMonkeyC

    Well...

For example, on the difference between the various types of apps available in Connect IQ (assuming they are using that rather than Connect, or Garmin Express or...)

I _did_ find something on problems viewing downloaded content...

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=G3tU0BUqbr6eeoII8BGRSA&productID=616398&searchQuery=download%20app%20where%20is%20it%3F&tab=topics

And yet... It ignores what is by far the most common question I have received where people have installed but cannot see their app - eg: they don't know they have a DataField rather than a widget or an app or a watchface. Which brings us back to why there isn't a customer facing explanation...

     I mean...

There isn't even an FAQ page?

    Come on...
