Starting an app

Can somebody please explain how apps will appear on my device?
Will there be a apps section in the main menu?
Will I be able to have an app startpage in the page loop of an existing profile and could I use that to create a more extensive data field, with things like communication to my phone?
  • I'm sure one of the ConnectIQ developers can most appropriately answer this, but it is covered a little bit in the user experience guide. There is some more detail in the version of the document that is distributed with the SDK. You can download that here.

It sounds like apps and widgets will appear in the page loop. On the 920xt, I think you cycle through the page loop with the menu button (it seems this won't work well when there are a many apps/widgets since there is no way to go backward). Once you've cycled to the app/widget you want, you can 'enter' it. On the 920xt it seems this would happen with the Enter key.

Thanks for your reply. I've read the documentation, and I think you're right about the widgets. However, nowhere in the documentation there's any mention about entering an app. If I start an app in the simulator it's just there.

For instance the question tonny.madson asked here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?185343-Request-Communication-permissions-for-datafields could be answered with "Use an app", if it's possible to use an app within the page loop of an existing profile.

Starting apps and widgets will vary from product to product, but you can see the VivoActive interface in DCRainmakers video here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTzAzAlsZTU

On the Forerunnner 920XT I believe widgets will be found in the screens accessible from the watch page like the built in activity monitoring screen. I don't know at this time the exact interface they have planned for launching apps, but we cannot run apps from within an activity profile. (Activity profiles are kind of like native applications.) The memory limit for data fields is lower because they have to run along side all the native functionality that is loaded during activity recording.

Alpha Monkey elaborated a bit more in in the thread you linked.

Can anybody explain how to find and active the raceqs app on a quatix 5

  • press the upper right button, and you'll see the list of activities,  move down that list and you'll see the app you're looking for, likely at the very end.
