Paddling Sports: How to detect current stroke rate and stroke per distance in API?

I'm considering building a new app that allows for more standard training methods and making some automatic metrics for paddling. However it is not clear to me that the stroke detection algorithm is exposed in the API. Am I missing something or will I need to reinvent the detection for strokes and compute the distances too?

AFAIK, there is no such “detection”. Similar to OWS, the algorithm is from garmin w filtering and what not.

Only thing u get is cadence data from the accelerometer. (And you can create ur own using those data)

Thanks. I'm new to this. What is OWS? And does the cadence work in a generic form so it just measures repetitive motion rates, so swimming, running, biking and paddling all generate a cadence number?

OWS = Open Water Swim. Only available on higher end devices
