Garmin Courses

Hi again, would I be correct in saying, the Courses menu in garmin connect, doesn't let you actually add a course if I have a waypoint list? Instead it's a visual pin dropper on a map only?

Is there any ergonomic way to input a course from a list in connect I can use later in an iterator??? I can't find it if there is?

Dropping a pin is quite useless for water activity hence none of the waypoint are Google map visible landmarks?

Some devices use FIT files.

Some devices use GPX.

That might only be for courses/tracks.

To get locations into the device, you have to use the method you arrived at using.

So, it's a sailing app where the waypoints are (fairly) large distances apart?

It there's a relatively long amount of time, then selecting a waypoint to go to on every step might not unreasonable.

One problem is that, while you can iterate through the locations (waypoints), you can't get any information about them beyond the location name.

So you cannot iterate a waypoint like a poi? And get distance / bearing for example?

Is that the same functionality as courses? Or does that actually do something aside from listing names?

You can iterate the user's locations and courses (they are separate lists).

All you can with the result is get the name or launch it.

You can't get any other detail. (If you could, the documentation would tell you what info you could get.)

Ok, If I launch it, and then I call onCompute, then I can get distance and bearing to the next point?

There's no way to "start" a course for use in a CIQ device app. You can only use the intent to launch a native app for that course using the intent.

See "PersistedContent" in the API doc.

Correct. All you can see in CIQ is the name of the waypoint. Not it's location or anything else.

OK, Plan B it is since it appears garmin have all but completely locked down the use of their own navigation computations to their own navigation apps. Fair enough.

I have got the navigation code to give a bearing and distance manually, using two different Lat / Longs in degrees. decimal minutes, and I can get the current position from onupdate from position info.

I'm still left with the problems of getting the actual lat long into the app from a user, for the calculations... however.... just realized I could potentially name the lat long points from basecamp, or connect with the lat long and a prefix, and then iterate to get the points from the device and into my app from just the name,Can anyone see an issue with doing this like character limits for the latlongname for example?

The only other option would be either create the waypoints on the device, or in the settings menu of the app....

I have some great ergonomic device ideas using the compass and accelerometers for entry though.
