CIQ apps being "blamed" for GPS fix time

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?335207-VivoActive-quot-GPS-Ready-quot-Time/page4

Somehow these are being tied to apps from developers.

BigTime is named and so is my MyCustim RunFields app from a beta I made for user.

I also saw somewhere that Brandon/Brian mentioned that BG color changes somehow "leaks" to the native garmin apps as well?
  • I know... It seems that there is a bit of misunderstanding there! When I first got the 3.30 FW update for the VA, it took a long time to get a GPS fix, but simply rebooting the va (to flush the GPS cache) was all it took, and I've posted that.

It's got nothing to do with CIQ. (I happen to run a bunch of CIQ stuff on mine :) )

With the Brandon/Brian thing, there are posts about how a CIQ widget changes the "profile color" of the default watchface on some devices (the fr x3x's - fixed in the latest device FW, BTW), but I've seen nothing about memory leaks...

I think that some of it, at least in the US, is that the va is selling with a big discount right now, and there are a ton of new users that are still learning the basics.
  • It's difficult for customers to discern between a firmware issue and a CIQ app issue. To most, it's all the same, so there isn't much we can do to avoid customers sometimes blaming apps for issues that are completely unrelated to CIQ. I did some asking around and there aren't any known issues with GPS acquisition on vivoactive with 3.30 firmware, so it's likely a cache issue like Jim suggested.

The color "leaking" thing isn't a memory issue, but related to the profile color applied to the default watch face on devices like the FR230. In some cases, a CIQ app will force a profile switch to the Connect IQ activity profile, which is blue, resulting in a blue default watch face. Like Jim mentioned, it's been addressed in the latest firmware, so no concerns there. :)

    Just people being people here.

Finding patterns and determining causation is like the #1 past time of those squishy things up in our skulls that we call brains.
I updated Big Time, and then my GPS worked better... ergo, Big Time is obviously responsible.

Anyone who has a reasonable amount of knowledge about the system knows this is nonsense, but on the scale from "the engineers who made it" to "electronics are magic", the user base is certainly going to be skewed toward the latter.

If you see someone blaming your app for something that it can't possibly have an impact on, it is best to just politely let them know that it should not be possible for a ConnectIQ App to affect GPS performance. If users are confident they are seeing a real impact on a device function as a result of a ConnectIQ app (like the color change mentioned here), you should definitely bring it to our attention here, so we can identify and fix the problem.
