Does the 3.1.x SDK connect the simulator to a nrf52840 for BLE, or does it only work with the nrf52 DK ?

I'm working with a Rigado BMD-340 (based on the nrf52840) I have a Thingy, which the BMD-340 recognizes in the nrf connect window. I've set the com port up correctly in the simulator settings 
 When I run/debug the Thingy52 app, I don't see any devices in the scan. I've tried the connectivity_2.0.1_115k2_with_s132_5.0.hex and the connectivity_4.0.0_115k2_with_s132_5.1.0.hex files loaded on the nfr52840. Same results.

It works with both the dongle and the nrf52-dk. You need to load different things on the dongle vs the nrf52-dk. And I've only used the nordic dongle. 
 Also, in the current sim, each time you restart the sim, the BLE comm port needs to be set up again, even if it's showing the correct comm port. 
 Say you're on com5, and the sim shows that. I change it to com5x, get an error, and then back to com5 and things work. It's like it's not being initalized correctly if you just start the sim and use the default from the last time.
