Firmware Update Question

I am trying to update my 920XT from firmware 5.20 to 6.10/6.11.
The Garmin Express and Web Updater thinks 5.20 are the latest versions.
I found the link to the 920XT 6.11 beta firmware page with the following instructions.

1. Connect your Forerunner 920XT to your computer using the USB cable.
2. Download and unzip Forerunner920XTBeta.zip. Place the gupdate.rgn file in the \GARMIN folder of your device's internal storage drive.
3. Disconnect your device from the computer, approve the update on the watch, and wait for the update to finish.

But when I copied the file in step 3, there is no screen to approve the update. Even if I toggle to the Software Update, it does not seem to see the file. The strange part is, if I reconnect the watch to my Mac, the firmware update file would disappear but the version would still read 5.20.

Sorry I am new at this. Your help is appreciated!

Regards,
Brian
  • If you plug the device back in with USB, is the .rgn file still there? Is it in the proper directory?
  • I don't have all the answers, but what I do know is that if you install beta FW, GE will only show the highest release version, which is lower than the beta version.

So if 6.10 is the latest release, and 6.11 is beta, GE will show you are up to date on 6.10

Thanks for the replies. I tried to copy the file to 2 different locations.
    a) /Volumes/GARMIN/

In this case, the file would stay there and nothing happens.

    b) /Volumes/GARMIN/GARMIN
When I copy it here, the gupdate.rgn would be there but after I disconnect and reconnect, the file would disappear.

For the firmware version, the watch still says 5.20 in the About section within the watch so I suspect it is still at 5.20.
  • Hi Brian,

please have a look at the attached screenshot. There you can see how the folder structure should look like on a FR920XT.

Download the Beta Firmware from: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7627
Unzig the file and copy only the "gupdate.rgn" file. Ignore the other files.
Copy the gupdate.rgn (2.1 MB) file to the GARMIN/ folder.

Please delete all files except the EPO.bin from the GARMIN/REMOTESW folder.

Unplug the watch and update to beta firmware. You should see the following popup:

If it doesn't work - please attach a screenshot from your FR920XT folder structure.

    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Daniel,

    Thanks for your help
Here is a screenshot of the file structure before I disconnect the watch. The only file in REMOTESW is EPO.BIN

After copying the gupdate.rgn file, I disconnected the watch but the update screen does not pop out.
After I reconnect the watch, the gupdate.rgn file disappears.

It is rather strange? Should I do a factory restore?

    Regards,
    Brian
  • Can you please attach the gupdate.rgn file?

    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Daniel,

Thanks for your prompt reply. The attachment size limit on the forum prevents me from attaching a file larger than 1MB.

I have placed the file on my dropbox account
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ch9e1s6hwiwps0h/gupdate.rgn?dl=0

Please let me know if there is anything else I can try.

    Regards,
    Brian
  • Brian,

your firmware update file works fine on my FR920XT.
Maybe you have to do a restore to default settings... :(

    Clearing User Data
You can restore all of the device settings to the factory default values.
    NOTE:
This deletes all user-entered information, but it does not delete your history.
    1 Hold "powerbutton".
2 Select Yes to turn off the device.
3 While holding "downbutton" hold "powerbutton" to turn on the device.
    4 Select Yes.

    Restoring All Default Settings
    NOTE:
This deletes all user-entered information and activity history.
You can reset all settings back to the factory default values.
    Select "3dotbutton" > Settings > System > Restore Defaults > Yes.

    Viewing Device Information
You can view the unit ID, software version, GPS version, and
    software information.
    Select "3dotbutton" > Settings > System > About.

Please let me know if it works after restore!

    Thanks,
    Daniel
  • Hello, I'm encountering exactly the same issue (no prompt for update, and GUPDATE.GCD file disappeared) when trying to upgrade my 935 to this https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=11751#Instruct

    Can you pls help?

  • Do you have an APAC device?  If so, you can't use the beta versions.
