What watch to get?

I skimmed through the API docs earlier; I'm thinking to get a Garmin watch (primarily for my own running), but with one eye on possible development for it.

Q1: is there any model that is particularly better than others, for testing and development?

Q2: can I install my own apps on my own watch, before submitting it to garmin for approval for the app store? (E.g. upload over USB cable is possible?)

Q3: we have a lot of experience with Asian languages; I noticed a "ForeAthlete 235J", etc. model mentioned in the app store. I guess this watch comes with a Japanese font, and the same model number without a "J" does not? Are there any other differences in the "J" models? (What I'm really hoping is that they are exactly the same, and the "J" models just have different marketing and support; meaning I could test a Japanese app on my own watch.)

Thanks.

    Hi allthenameshavebeentaken,

    regarding your questions:

Q1: My favorite watch is the Fenix3 because it's a really nice looking watch i can wear everyday and it supports all kind of sports i prefer (running, cycling, hiking). It's also nice that it has a lot of sensors inside. For CIQ point of view i think all CIQ compatible watches are good for developing/ testing. You have to decide if you prefer a square (VA, FR920XT, Epix), a round watch (F3, D2) or a Semi-Round-Watch (FR 230 / 235 / 630). If you want the watch with the most memory and best speed i think you should go with the Epix.

Q2: Yes you can install your own apps on your watch before submitting them to Garmin App Store. (via USB cable)

Q3: Therefor i can't give you an exact answer. As i know the asian watches can differ from the normal watches on hardware side.

    Thanks,
    Daniel
  • Hi,

Q1: I purchased the Vivoactive for this purpose and has been perfect for a running and swimming, and as use for development. Looks are more smart watch than classic timepiece tho.

Q2: As per Daniels answer, yes for the Vivoactive via the USB Charging cable.

    Cheers
    Chris

Thanks. I was expecting "get the latest" rather than "anything CIQ-compatible", so that is good to know.
