Heart rate data from Apple Watch

I have been browsing through the developer docs, but not sure if this is possible.

Could we somehow use apple heart rate data during an activity?

I don't think the Garmin watch could pair with the apple watch.

One way would be to have an iOS app that relays heart rate data to an app on a Garmin watch.

Thoughts?
  • Assuming you want the data to be recorded in the .fit file (which gets uploaded and displayed on Garmin Connect), there is no way to do that.

If you just wanted to display the heart rate data from an Apple Watch on the screen of your Garmin, that could be done but only in a widget or a watch-app (not a data field) and it would require a companion app on your iOS device. Very few people are going to train with both a Garmin fitness device, an Apple watch, and an iPhone on them, so this isn't going to get very far. Do you actually work out with two watches?

It might be much simpler to just buy a heart rate monitor.

Hi. That’s not true about Apple Watch and Garmin device. I have an edge 810 and an Apple Watch. The edge is to see what I am doing and the watch records my performance. If Garmin had an Apple Watch app I could record my body’s data on the watch and the ride on the garmin and then garmin connect could amalgamate the two.

strava does this by the way but I don’t want the hassle of using Apple Watch strava and then linking to garmin connect. It would be great if garmin played nice with Apple Watch.

  • Hi. That’s not true about Apple Watch and Garmin device.

Which part is not true? That very few people use both an Apple Watch and a Garmin device during the same activities? The only data that I have is anecdotal and based on what I've gathered over the years. I do know people that one both, but you are the first person I've heard of that uses both simultaneously.

  • Does the AW have the means to broadcast HR data as an external HRM would?  In that case, you can pair it with the Garmin device.  When this thread started, Garmin devices only handled ANT sensors, but today ANT and BLE.

in the Garmin world, say you had a 945 and Edge, and you could set the 945 to broadcast HR data and with the Edge paired, the HR data would be included in the .fit on the edge

I always use the apple watch and my garmin edge 820. The apple watch is my watch and the garmin is my cycling computer.  But I have the same problem - can't see the heart rate data after a ride is complete.  The Garmin syncs with Strava (which is not open on the phone or the watch) very well and quickly,  .  I have the garmin connect app open on my phone when I ride.  I just always have my phone with me when I ride.  I have all of the permissions enabled in the Apple health app for Garmin connect, but still heart rate is not displayed.  When I run I just use the strava app on the watch and the heart rate data syncs just fine with the Strava iphone app (which is not running on the iphone) as soon as the run is complete.  Don't know why heart rate data can't be displayed in Connect app when a ride is completed.

  • Not finding answers to this question..

  • Looks like it's possible if you buy another piece of hardware -_- ($50)

heartbeatz links Apple Watch to bike computers and consoles.

Bike computers/consoles that take in heart rate from Apple Watch with heartbeatz include: Wahoo Fitness®, Peloton®, Garmin®, etc. Compatible with Apple watch® Series 2+

  • Yeah I think it’s likely technically feasible to add this functionality to the Garmin Connect app, since there are other 3rd party apps that do it (BlueHeart, etc). I’d guess Garmin isn’t overly interested in features that detract from reasons to buy one of their own watches.
