Integrate F3 with Recon Jet

Has anyone developed or plans to develop anything to put these 2 devices together?
The Jet uses ANT+ and it connects independently to the Garmin HRM and Bike Pods, however, the choice of data fields is very limited compared to the F3 and if the 2 communicated your HUD would become the one of a space craft.
  • Can you elaborate a bit? Just looked up Recon Jet, didn't know about it before.
It's a glass with display like google glass, and with its own OS programmable via API.

It already has GPS in there. What fields would you want to add to your Recon Jet?

It has the GPS alright (more powerful than the F3's), a camera (video-photo), compass with the ability to tag where other JET are on the compass, a map (with the tags too) and a small range of apps I couldn't install yet because of an issue the tech support is looking at.

The apps are: VIRB, refuel reminder (drink-food), sailing, weather and a few games.

This is just an enquiry on what can be done to hook the 2 devices, I'm sure it's a matter of imagination... for example, draw track on the JET map using the F3 rather than the JET (the JET GPS is more powerful than the F3's according to a few tests I did). It's just an example. I'm sure the Recon guys did not implement anything on their side because the only devices that could really do something with it are basically the A3 and the F3.

Yet the most important thing is for sure the acquisition into the glasses of the F3's data fields.

The current JET datafields (with autoscroll setting available) are:
    1) dist, duration, speed, elev gain, avg spd, pace, avg pace, grade, calories (standard metrics tab).
    2) hr, avg hr, cad, avg cad, pwr, avg pwr, max pwr, 3/10/30 sec avg pwr.

See for example you can't get the temperature, nor the F3's baro altitude, nor the graph screens (elv graph, hr graph) and other IQ fields. The F3 has really hundreds of useful data fields, it's all about establishing a connection.

Basically what the JET does is look for BLE and find the phone (so you can talk answer, refuse calls), read the notifications (txt messages, etc.) and then look for sensors that work in ANT+. In this page there's only the bike, bike/cad, hr and pwr pods but no watch. Conversely, in the F3 sensors page, there's no JET, it doesn't get found because the 2 are supposed to be paired but none of them is looking for the other.

I can't say more at this stage because its utility (that works basically like Garmin Express) finds a connection error upon uploading the settings from their website (their website is fantastic, more or less the same as Garmin Connect) which is where you configure SOME of the settings of the JET, whereas others are directly accessed via the unit setup controls (4-axis joystick for orientation of the monitor and another one, swiping 4-axis "joystick" for naviation and 2 buttons to select or go back with quick access features).

I have submitted a similar request of information to the JET devs to the one I am submitting to you here. If the F3 enters the JET and vice-versa it will truly be a fantastic combo.

    patch

    OS patch released, 4.3

    SDK updated
  • In talking with Recon, they're *very* interested in doing something with Garmin that integrates between the Recon Jet and Garmin devices. They talked a bit at the ANT+ Symposium together, whether or not that goes anywhere I don't know. I get the impression whether it goes anywhere is on Garmin, though certainly Recon could just develop a Connect IQ app themselves and see if they run into any roadblocks.

Recon has an API, but I don't know if they allow unbridled ANT channel access over it (I'd suspect so, and if not and if someone - developer - is interested I can try and make that happen). Meanwhile, Connect IQ could be leveraged here via either direct connection between the two devices over ANT, or, actually via a mobile app (such as the Recon Jet app).

I struggle a bit with the actual use case between the two since there's a bit of overlap. In general I wouldn't say the Jet GPS is better than the F3 - at least not in the city from what I've seen on actual rides/runs. In many ways, the Jet would benefit by being able to offload GPS duties to the F3, as it would save massive amounts of battery (a key limiter of Jet).
