Maybe you can but then you have to consider this :
- larger size of the file, so consumes more memory
- no transparency if you would like overlay functionality

Anyway, I haven't tried that (yet) and don't think I will.

Regarding memory it doesn't matter what type of image you use. It's all translated to the same binary type during compilation.
