ConnectIQ store categories

so how do the categories in the new ConnectIQ store app relate to the categories when we upload our app?

The ConnectIQ app store categories are "Navigate Your World", "Performance Metrics", "Having Fun", "Power Tools", "Life at a Glance".  all kind of fuzzy if you ask me.

The categories I can choose when uploading an app are "Consumption", "Counter", "Goal", "Cycling", "Environmental", etc.  Not much better, but worse they aren't aligned.

My app (Wind Field) is a datafield with the current wind.  I have it as Environmental, but I don't know how to get it into any of those categories on the store.  It'd be great if it were under "Weather at a Glance", as that it exactly what it is.

further to that, when you sort by Rating, apps with 1 5 star review are higher than apps with 20+ reviews but an average of 4.8.  Technically it's correct of course, but perhaps some kind of weighting system should be used instead.

  • One thing with the main page of the new Connect IQ apps, is that things aren't just shown based on the category you set, but also by the app type, so app type comes into play.

With "Weather at a glance" those are only widgets, so things like data fields, watch faces and device apps won't show there no matter what you set as category.  It's the same for other things, where what's shown may only be data fields, or device apps.

So, you may want to experiment a bit with categories and subcategories a bit to have things show on the main page in the new app.

thanks jim.  was hoping someone from garmin would chime in.  i also just started looking at the "Popular" sorting in the new store app.  not sure how that is calculated as it's certainly not by downloads.

the first 5 datafields sorted by popular are

Strava Relative Effort with 860k downloads

    Heart Rate Zones with 215k

    My Edge2 20k

    Fat Burner 80k

    All In One 30k

Your Chart Data Field is 7th with 67k

not sure if i'm really complaining, but more just confused and looking for clarity as we are all putting a lot of time into the platform and just trying to figure out what i'm working with, store wise

  • This is the same as the "most popular" has  been all along.  It's based on the stars in the review, but there is a bit more, where downloads since the last update (or maybe it's something like the last 2 weeks) is also involved.  That's why when you update an app, it popularly goes way down for a period of time.

  • Sorry to be bringing up an ancient thread, but it seemed relevant.

Jim, you’ve mentioned a few times that uploading a new version clobbers popularity stats, but is it just software updates or is it any changes to listing that reset those numbers?

In my case, I’ll be updating soon anyway to fix a bug, but I want to play with categories too as I’m not at all certain I’ve chosen the best one.

    Does it matter?

Can I change every week or so and see which works best, or do I need to be more scientific?

  • The stats can reset when the internal version number of an app changes (you can see this for your own apps in the web app store).  This can happen when you upload a new .iq or if auto-migration is applied to your app.  The same times that ERA reset, or that reviews for "current version" reset.

Changing a description or a category shouldn't do it.

  • A related question;

Is there any way I can find the categories a developer has used for any given app / datafield?

The ones listed in the upload form seem to have negligible overlap for the ones available in the CIQ store! Almost as if they are entirely unrelated...

    How are the two mapped?

For example, if I wanted to list my app under "active lifestyle apps" or "better living through apps" rather than "health and wellness" or move something into "useful workout metrics", what would I select?

Or how might I distinguish the subtle distinctions between (and then select categories to map to):

    • Performance metrics
    • Training metrics
    • Useful workout metrics

What do any of those mean, anyway?

Can a field / app / widget appear in multiple categories in CIQ despite us only being able to list one on the upload form?

    Baffled of Dublin

  • It are all relevant questions you're posing, but the better suggestion would be to get rid of the mapping and to be able to directly choose the category where the app should be placed in.

I can understand where the mapping originated from when the concept of the new store front was conceived, but I can not see ANY reason to maintain the mapping, just do the conversion once and save the new categorization alongside the app.

  • A secondary question that I could have posed (in the absence of directly choosing the mapping) is how can I see what category my fields / apps / widgets are ACTUALLY listed in if I don't find them by accident through searching? Slight smile

  • Some of it is also based on the app type.  The Watch Face categories are all (obviously) watch faces, but things like weather, are all widgets.  Other categories are all DFs, others, all device apps.

That said, I've never understood where some things wind up.  I have one WF that shows under "data rich", where most of my other ones are just under Digital Watch faces.

It would be nice if it was a bit easier to control, but I guess the down side would be you could keep changing categories/sub categories to promote your apps.
