Fonts in the watches - available for USE?

I note that the fonts in used between the different watches are different. This makes it harder to have 1 code and run all.
So, I was thinking of using / compiling in custom fonts. Is it doable? (for a datafield)

Also - are the native fonts in used by the diff watches available for download to be used?
I'm curious to know.

Thanks
  • You can get the names of the fonts used for each device by looking in <SDK>/bin/devices.xml, and you can usually do a quick google search to find the font files.

If you use layouts, you can get device specific placement of each drawable, so you shouldn't need the fonts to be identical on each device.

  • thanks Travis. I know what fonts they are using from the xml file actually. (I actually also copy pasted that into another thread)

Also I did try using layouts for pixel placements. However, the issue is not really pixel placements, on the Epix, the font size is just too big for the fot_number_mild. Can't fit the datafields into it.

Hence i tot of using custom fonts.

I did a Google search and fount the roboto and steel fish font. But steelfish denotes that there is a need for a app license - and I, not exactly sure I need an app license as theoretically (I presume) garmin alry paid for it and embedded it into the watch (but not for the Epix) so.. I am not sure if I can use it w/o asking for a incense.

    Hence the question to Garmin.

But I've not been able to locate the DIGI Font tho
  • hello garmin...

Do you guys know if I can use the steelfish font? Or any of the native fonts in the watches?
  • We also included an appendix in the UX guide that outlines all of the fonts, sizes, and available characters.

As far as I am aware, the native fonts are freely available for use. For example, Steelfish:

    http://www.dafont.com/steelfish.font

    ...or Roboto Condensed:

    http://www.dafont.com/roboto.font

Since you mentioned it, Steelfish has a license that allows free commercial use.

Roboto Is free for use. But Steelfish (I love this font on my F3) it states that an APP license is needed for embedding in apps.

If you're making an application and you're using my fonts to create a title or some other graphic elements, the regular (desktop) license is sufficient. Sometimes you need to include or encode the actual font file data inside the application. This requires an app license. There are two types of application license.
  • Have you looked at http://www.1001freefonts.com/

Could be you can find something there that is almost the same, but with no licencing fees. Could it also be that you only have to pay the licence fee if you charge for your app? (unless you charge, it's not being used for commercial use)

Or maybe the fee is really cheap (like $5 for a lifetime licence) based on how you use it.

    At http://www.fontspring.com/fonts/typodermic/steelfish

Looks like a number of the variations are free even for embedding...

Oh, wait, I now see.. $60 for embedded. I guess if you're commercial and charge, the font folks want their cut... Similar to charging for something in CIQ :)
  • what font is DIGI? Can't seem to locate it.
