FR 225 just announced - without CIQ?

It's a new version of the FR220, but includes an optical HRM in the case (Mio's), and Activity Tracking (steps/sleep/etc), but a surprising thing it doesn't have is Connect IQ.

It also doesn't have base FW stuff like notifications..

I wonder why. Not enough resources available on the device? Not enough time to include it (they might have wanted Garmin's first optical HRM out as quickly as possible)
  • The 225 was announced in May. They've recently announced the Edge 20, 25 and 520, as well as a handful of other devices, none of which have ConnectIQ support.

As for your question, I'm betting they're holding off on announcing new ConnectIQ devices until the ConnectIQ 1.2.0 launch in September (probably at the ANT+ symposium again). This is one year ConnectIQ was announced, and I think we'll see a handful of new devices then. We'll probably see a few lower-end devices trickle out over the next three months; ConnectIQ support will be one of the things that separates the low/mid-range devices from the high-end.

Apparently true, but it does have BLE for sync, etc. Seems Smart Notifications and CIQ are reserved for higher models?

The 225 is a "higher model" than the vivoactive..... (and more expensive!)
  • at this juncture - CIQ is just for play for us. Gives me something to do and bang head over as well as scratch my own itches.

Other than that, it's marketing. Real Devs are focusing on Apple Watch (despite analysts dropping sales estimates from 24m to like 21m)

I think in a couple years time - Garmin will need to be very afraid. But right now, not really. I still prefer a fitness watch that does (nearly) all (well of course the GPS has to work eh.. Properly)

For the 225, the optical HRM is still not up to snuff. (Impression wise as well as based on an article I read over the weekend)
