Problem to install new apps or updates

Since a few days I get error messages when I try to install new apps or update existing apps. I get error messages from the iOS app but also from Garmin Express (Mac OS). The Fenix 3 is connected and activities and steps are synched without any problem.

I have tried rebooting the F3 (several times), and I have also deleted the iOS app and installed a fresh copy. The problem remains.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Half success, but still no way to manage apps

OK, I went through the whole torture as described, deleting all apps (PRG and prg), resetting to factory settings, plus I had to re-install the iOS app and re-pair the two and with the Garmin Connect account.

    Now the zombies are gone.

Garmin Express, as usual, does NOT manage to read all installed apps, and often does not install all selected apps/widgets etc. (after ejecting the F3 "drive") half of the apps are missing. Often some are deleted by GE. The order of widgets and apps is almost always messed up and not as shown in GE. But this is a problem of GE and I had it already before.

Now I have a working F3 without zombies, but Garmin Connect Mobile causes a reboot each time it tries to manage the apps.

That means that I can not manage apps with GE and neither with the smartphone app. F*ck. What's going on?

    Yeah Brilliant....

I managed to connect the iOS app once. And bingo, the zombies show up on the iPhone under "Not installed apps".

Trying to delete or uninstall factory apps like triathlon crashes the F3. It reboots. No zombies on the watch but the triathlon app is still around. even though I had deleted and re-installed the app, and had paired the factory settings clean F3 again with my connect account and the iOS app.

It seems as if Garmin Connect remembers the F3 and keeps a record of all those zombie apps. Otherwise I wouldn't understand why a "clean" F3 would not work with its counterparts, GE and GCmobile.

@planetscooter, in regards to the device crashes you are seeing when connecting to the iOS app, could you send/post the ERR_LOG.TXT file located in the base directory of your fenix? I briefly talked with a member of the Connect Mobile team and it *seems* like that issue you're seeing is due to a bug in the device firmware. I'll pass that error log along to the device team and see if they can help figure out the cause of the problem.

Thanks Ken, and the whole team at Garmin. Thanks for caring and responding really quickly.

I will send the error log as soon as I'm back to the computer. I'm enjoying a computer free weekend right now, but Monday the latest I will get back to you.

Ken, Brandon, anything new in my case?

The problem with the zombies is still there, and I'd like to clean up my apps list and configure some apps (datafields etc.) and clone some (create new apps based on the stock apps, e.g. for eBike from bicycle). I don't want to spend too much time in vain, in case I have to clean the device again and start from scratch.

So I wonder whether you found a solution to get rid of those zombies and get Garmin Express and Garmin Connect back on track to manage installed apps. I thought that there must be an inventory database of of installed apps that is messed up. If there is a way to delete that database and force the F3 to re-build it, the job might be done.
  • No word yet from the Fenix team on this. I'll bug them today to see if I can have your issue upped in priority.
  • Closing the loop on this. We were able to get this fixed after an update to the latest firmware and a restoration of language files. It's not clear what caused this, though it looks like Garmin Express may be to blame.
