Garmin Logo Use Policy Info

The developer agreement states that approval must be obtained before the Garmin logo can be used in Connect IQ apps, but until now we haven't had an official logo use approval procedure in place. Recently, a developer contacted me about obtaining approval to use the Garmin logo in his app, so I decided it's probably time to have something a little more formal in place.

We've tried to keep the logo use approval process very simple:

1. If the Garmin logo appears in a design at submission, the developer will be notified that the app is under review and will be provided a copy of Garmin's logotype guidelines for reference ()
2. The Connect IQ team will do an initial review to ensure the logo adheres to the basic logotype guidelines
3. Garmin's legal team will check to ensure there are no trademark or copyright concerns
4. The Connect IQ team will approve or reject the app based on the initial review and feedback from the legal team

I don't anticipate that this will create any additional burden on developers or delays in the approval process, but I wanted to let everyone know what to expect. Frankly, if you're already meeting our basic approval guidelines (no offensive material, no copyrighted or trademarked material, etc.), then the logo use approval is likely just a formality. Any already approved apps in the app store that include the Garmin logo have been grandfathered in and will not require any additional approval.

Thanks!

  • This actually really surprises me. Do the folks in Garmin Support know about this? :o

Let's say a 3rd Party develops a watchface with the Garmin logo on it, as that watchface "misbehaves". It says "Garmin" on it, so the user calls Garmin support. People will see that, but not remember who authored the app.

Calling Garmin Support for Garmin CIQ apps (there are a bunch of Garmin's own apps there), makes sense, but has anyone told support that stuff with a visible Garmin Logo, might not be garmin's problem?

I don't think I've ever seen a 3rd party app that was able to use the Apple or Google logo for example...

Having the Garmin logo kind of makes it Garmin's problem... At least in the eyes of end users....
  • You've got some good points, and they're something I had considered, as well. We've worked directly with support to make sure they're well educated about Connect IQ, so I don't anticipate this will cause them too many problems. I'll be sure to communicate this policy with product support so they're aware.
