Vivoactive 2.90 Firmware Release Notes

As promised, here are the release notes for the vivoactive 2.90 firmware release. I've primarily included the changes that are relevant for Connect IQ:

  • Corrected ConnectIQ bottom data field size, which prevented data fields from drawing to the edge of the screen
  • Added the ability to back out of a progress bar in Connect IQ apps
  • Fixed a bug which caused a crash if the device was in a Connect IQ app when the settings file was recorded

And of course, addresses the dreaded fireworks bug. :)
  • An Interesting find! (a good one!). Not sure when this changed (2.70,2.80,2.90), but it has!

I have a widget that I've not used in a while (I made it into an App), that does a makeJsonRequest() to get data off the web. In the past, the widget would revert to the watchface in 10 seconds, which often wasn't enough time to request/receive the data and display it with enough time to see the data.

Now, that widget doesn't revert for 30 seconds, and works very consistantly! It may be from the Comm permission or the makeJsonRequest itself, as a simple widget without any Comm still reverts in 10 seconds. I may now get adventurous and see if I can sneak in a request for position data, so the data isn't tied to a fixed location!
  • Oh my! I'm like a kid at xmas that found a winning lottery ticket in his stocking!

I now have a widget for the va, that get's the GPS location, and pulls the current weather for that location off the web, and displays it with time to read it! I can delete/hide that, shall I say "crazy and very wrong", standard weather widget off the va!

I'm guessing this change in revert time is in the FW and not CIQ, and was something done so that the standard weather widget wouldn't be so inaccurate most of the time (like 20 degrees off on temp!)
  • There was a change in the v2.80 firmware for vivoactive that enabled extended connected widget timeouts from 15 seconds to 45 seconds. As long as a widget has permissions for the Communications module, it'll get this longer timeout.

    Thanks!
  • I upgraded to 2.90 firmware last night and when I went for a run this morning (run activity). The run was recorded correctly, however the steps were not recorded.

    How do you upgrade firmware

I upgraded to 2.90 firmware last night and when I went for a run this morning (run activity). The run was recorded correctly, however the steps were not recorded.
How do you upgrade the firmware? I can's see any indication of how to do this either on the device or on Garmin Connect. Thanks!
  • You have to use Garmin Express. Plug into the charging cable, and GE will see if an update is available, and ask if you want yo install it.
  • US version

Is the update only for US version Vivoactive? I plugged in my Vivoactive through Garmin Express and says that my Vivoactive is up to date to Firmware 2.80. Just checking. Thanks.
