Should I remove my app from the store?

Hi Garmin

I’m the developer of the Shorts weather app:

but after a minor fall, I ended up with a Garmin watch that looks like this:

I contacted Garmin support, but they could not promise that they could fix it, and in case they couldn’t, I would be paying the price of a new FR965, which would be too tight from a budget standpoint.

The question is then; now that I can’t maintain the app properly, should I just remove it?

  • You can still maintain it using the simulator. You could also publish the app in GitHub and let others take it from here

You shouldn't (generally) need a real device to support an app properly. Garmin isn't expecting developers to buy "every" real device.

My app is mostly used by watch owners and I didn't have a watch for years. It also runs on many, many devices I don't own.

Garmin doesn't fix people's broken devices (AFAICT). They send them a different, refurbished one. They might give you a discount on a replacement.

It would likely be way too expensive to repair people's actual devices. It's going to be cheaper and faster to just send a refurbished unit that they know works.

  • To do support, you really need at least one device.  There are things that don't work the same in the sim, such as SensorHistory.  On device maps are also different in the sim.  And there are other things too.

For watchface development, it might make sense to have two devices -one AMOLED and the other MIP

  • This app, in particular, seems like it shouldn't need a real device.

It's also already done (which suggests even less need for a real device).

In any case, even if he needs a device, he doesn't need to "rush" to shut his app down because he currently doesn't have a device.
