"The icon format is invalid." - Cannot Submit New App

OK, this is my third app store submission ... but won't submit.  Has something changed or an upload bug (Garmin, please don't make it SO HARD !)

The Submit message is coming back with "The icon format is invalid."

I have tried with the (No) setting for Add Icons for App Store on Device (Optional)

I have tried with the (Yes) setting also with various colour depths and JPG and PNG formats. Nada.

I can see from the last new app I submitted around 4 weeks ago I put (No) for the icons and that published OK.

My other submission is that it is a red-herring error message but I checked F12 for other responses.

Anyone managed a new application submission in the last few days?

  • Haven't upload recently but met similar error in the past. However in each place it's written what image formats and maximum file size they accept. Pick small picture from another app and upload that image to every place where you have to have an image. Then after it's saved go and edit it and add the real images one by one.

  • Ah, thank you - top tip!
The error was *nothing* to do with icon files.

Starting with images from a previous submission when I uploaded the 500x500 in JPEG or PNG I got the error; only when saving to GIF did I manage to pass the hidden test.  I had used both MS Paint and IrfanView to create my images so I'm not sure what format/compression/embedded icon is expected within the file but GIF was the workaround that worked for me once I got a template application submitted and could start editing/replacing image files.

  • Strange. Were they bigger than 300kB? Probably not. I have both pngs and gifs in use. I edit them with gimp. The only problem I found was that animated pngs don't work (they only show the first frame) in some places where animated gifs work.
