Camera control?

Hi all,

I'm not so technically inclined, but would it be possible to create an app that would serve as controls for your phones camera? Would only care about simply being able to take a photo with the push of one of the watches' buttons (I have a vivoactive). Just thinking about backpacking and use my trekking pole as a 'selfie stick' (I already regret using that phrase). Just curious if possible!

That's a demerit... Three demerits and you'll receive a citation. -- Dwight Schrute
  • It should be possible, but would require support on the phone (probably an app) to do so.
  • Both Android and iOS OEM cameras support bluetooth shutter on the camera...this should be an easy app. I would love to see this on the Fenix3!

That doesn't matter. ConnectIQ doesn't allow direct access to bluetooth. You can either send data to/from the Garmin Connect Mobile app, or an app that is built on the Garmin ConnectIQ framework.
  • A little bit of research indicates that the camera shutters work by acting as a keyboard, most likely sending the enter key to the phone. So no connectIQ widget would allow this, but an official garmin widget would be able to?
  • As mentioned above, the only option available to a ConnectIQ app would be to write a companion app that runs on the phone that communicates with the ConnectIQ app on the device. Pressing a button on the device would talk to the app over bluetooth (using the Communications module), and the app would trigger the shutter.

I'm betting that a native app would have to do the same thing. It would send a message to the Garmin Connect Mobile app on the phone, and that app would request a photo be taken.

Throwing my hat in the ring for a remote control button for the iPhone camera app.
  • iOS can supposedly work with the volume button as shutter button.
So, theoretically the music control widget would function for this.

But alas - that widget doesn't have a volume. Haha

I can buy a $10 Bluetooth button that will control my iPhone's camera if in camera app. But, I would much rather not have to carry that thing around if I could use my watch. I photograph, on a tripod, with my iPhone quite often so this would be great.

Why doesn’t freakin Garmin add a camera widget to the software????? This is now a Standard feature in almost all low end smart watches.

Come on Garmin, I have been waiting for this, just do it instead of adding crap with every update.
