[Request] Soccer / Football Performance Tracking App

Hi, I just bought a Fenix 3 and am new to the Garmin Forum. I want to use the watch among other activities to track my (amateur) soccer / football performance. It would be great to record

- the distance run during a game or training
- number of sprints
- own goals scored (through pushing a hardware button for every goal)
- own assists made (through pushing a hardware button for every assist)

The screen can show 3-4 fields including the information above and maybe heart rate in addition. This app goes more to the motivational side and can be helpful to track the performance. It should be easily transferrable to Basketball or other Team sports.

Anybody interest in developing the app? I would be glad to contribute more although I am not a programmer.

  • I second this request. I have the Vivoactive.
But...is there even an activity type called "soccer" or "football"?
In Garmin Connect, I see pretty random stuff like kitesurfing, but not soccer.

*** I've used my Tomtom Multisport many times for friendly Saturday soccer matches and it's pretty cool to see overall distance (which I think is pretty accurate), time, where I was on the field, max. speed, etc. I even used my HR monitor one time just out of curiosity. When I export the file to Garmin Connect it shows up as "unknown" activity or something like that.
  • Yes, there is an activity type for soccer. I made a generic app called Activity Recorder that allows you to record sessions of this type. I could pretty easily create a soccer app based on the activity recorder.

As for the data fields proposed, total distance is trivial. The goal and assist counter data fields would be easy to do as well, but the data could not be written to the fit file. A lap button press could be mapped to goal (this would come through on Garmin Connect as a lap, so you'd have the approximate game time that the goal was scored). Maybe a single tap for assist and double tap for goal? The problem would be sprint detection. That is a sprint defined as? Is your definition consistent with everyone else in the world? How accurate do you want the detection to be?
  • Hmm... maybe I'm missing something, but in Garmin Connect I do not see the possible of editing the workout from "uncategorized" to "soccer" -- there are several options under "other" such as kayaking or kite surfing, but no "soccer"

As far as an App, I DEFINITELY would want to know total distance. Actually, that's the most interesting metric because you never really know how much you run.

As far as goals or assists, I can keep track of those in my head during the game and do not really care to record final scores. (I guess it could be interesting to see how well I sleep in weeks after I've won versus losing!! ;)

Yes, you are right. The ConnectIQ API has the ActivityRecording.SPORT_SOCCER enumeration, but Garmin Connect doesn't have a Soccer activity type in their dropdown. If you record an activity with the aforementioned Activity Recorder app, it comes across in Garmin Connect as Uncategorized. Note that there are a bunch of activity types that are in the same boat.

I'm curious why ConnectIQ offers it as an activity type, but that activity type isn't recognized by Garmin Connect. Perhaps one of the Garmin guys can provide some insight.

The source of the activity types is the FIT protocol. I don't know why some of the sport types are not supported in Garmin Connect

    Great Information. Thanks!
  • Add soccer, please.

    I agree with the above.
There is an activity description for wing-suit flight which is kind of rare but not one for the hyper-common soccer??
    I have the Vivoactive.

  • There's also an option for RC/Drone. What the what?! Since when is "just standing there" a physical activity?

As for soccer tracking, to the OP with the Fenix 3, I wouldn't recommend wearing a $600 watch out on the pitch (or anything on your wrist for that matter). I have considered this issue myself for a couple of weeks and I am left with the following option: going to buy a Garmin Footpod and put it inside a pair of Adidas boots that are compatible with their own footpod - hopefully the size matches up (or close enough to shim with some non-stick putty).
  • soccer activity

    Any updates on this request?

Would love to have this app on my vivoactive HR. I'm currently using hSport app. It records the distance for outdoor soccer with breaks pauses. But I would love to be able to see heat maps for positions. That would be incredible.i would definitely pay for an app that allows me do this.

I heard Garmin just held a conference for developers, would love to see better IQ apps. Soccer is one of the most popular sports I bet lots of ppl would be interested in an app like this.

WHO WILL RISE TO THE OPPORTUNITY?!!💪
  • Sports+ is released and will be available in the app store in a few days. I will need some volunteers to help on all the different metrics and fields needed to support Soccer, Basketball, Tennis, Football, Hunting and Fishing!
