Can You describe functionality, layout and navigation?
I would say a rectangular grid layout of the ten number digits (0-9) plus a decimal button plus the four operations (+, -, /, *) plus equals sign. So 16 small buttons. Plus display box. Really, I'm thinking of the same thing as an old calculator watch. Very basic.
If those are too many buttons, maybe two scroll wheels where you can choose two numbers to do the operations on, in addition to a scroll wheel for the operations. However, the number scroller would have to scroll from two decimal places over to the thousands, so maybe that wouldn't be any easier.
Maybe one scroll wheel of numbers, you choose one, then press an operation button (or choose from a scroller), then choose another number using the same scroll wheel?
Even for devices that have a touch screen, the user experience guide (part of the documentation) indicates that some devices only have a grid of 9 cells for detecting press events, so using a grid of 16 buttons would be problematic. Just displaying the digits 0-9 for picking would require two screens. You could do a few digits on each screen and display several screens, but this would get annoying pretty quick.
For devices without a touch screen, it would be very frustrating. It would require 11 key presses enter the number 1973 (assuming 1 was initially selected, the up/down arrows were used to navigate digits in order, and enter key to select them).
I think a better option would be to have a screen showing recent calculations. Pressing the Enter key would pull up a number picker to pick the number. Once the number is picked, a menu to select the operation would appear, and once that was picked, another number picker would appear. Once all three were available, the pickers and menus would be popped and the calculation would be displayed on the recent calculations page. It would not be difficult to implement.
