FYI, using existing app for weights/etc and recategorizing after gives wrong calories

Just went to the gym to work out and use some of the cardio machines and did what people suggested, recording as one of the apps (indoor walking) and then recategorized afterwards. I also created a new workout in garmin connect categorized correctly as weights and stair machine.

The first method gave me about 100 kcal for stairs, and the second one gave me 200 kcal.

Until Travis or someone can provide us apps for each activity, it seems best to avoid using the watch and just create the workouts in garmin connect.
  • I don't know that any app I create will give you an 'accurate' estimate of the calories burned. I have no control over how the calories are calculated, and no way to allow the user to specify the calories they think they burned.

For all I know, if the user selects flexibility or strength training there would be no calorie count at all.

I think the algorithms they have for each category are more accurate than switching categories after the fact. So, for instance, I go into The GC app and add a workout and select a category and specify time and it fills in calories. So they do come up with calories based on just time and category. I can't say if they're super accurate, but I'm sure my twenty minutes on the stair machine after lifting weights is closer to the 200 kcal than the the 100 kcal it estimated for just walking that time period. Makes sense, right. Climbing stairs is harder. Anyway, if you can specify those two variables, shouldn't it populate calories just like GC does?
