Create a custom activity - Vivoactive

Only thing I need is to be able to rename an activity or have a activityapp. that can be edited and labeled with the type of activity you want.
  • Renaming one of the built-in activity types is not an option, and making a ConnectIQ app that allows the user to specify the app name shown in the ConnectIQ app list is not possible either.

If, as an example, you wanted an app that had the name 'Yoga' in the ConnectIQ application list, that could be done. It would require the app be built with that name. If you wanted another app that was named 'Fly Fishing', That would require another app to be created with that name.

If you don't care what the app does or looks like, just that you be able to specify the name of the app, this is trivial. You just need to give the developer the name and icon you want to be displayed.

If you want the app to provide actual functionality, then you have to list your requirements. For example, if you wanted to be able to record activity data, or if you want to display something like a data field, those requirements would need to be enumerated so that the developer could implement them. If you want the app to look and behave like the built-in apps, all of that would need to be implemented; the built-in apps cannot simply copied.

I'm not saying someone isn't willing to take on your project, just that all of your requirements need to be provided if you want to be happy with the result. If you want something just like the built-in running app, but with a different name, that is a very big request with a very small benefit.

Thx for the very detailed answer.

I can ofcourse just choose indoor running, and Setup the screens I want and rename after upload.

I would definitely like a yoga app that's just titled yoga (and categorized as "other" since there is no yoga on the list), shows the time, and that's it. If you can, allow us to manually input calories, or avg heart rate so it calculates calories. Also an app that does the same with weights. I think you mentioned you're working on these, right?

I didn't know they couldn't just be one app. But separate apps that measure time and where we can calculate calories would work fine. It's really the best we have to measure activities like those with current technology.
  • Sorry if I'm posting too much lately, but given my recent experience today of getting different calorie values depending on whether I record activities on the watch or GC app, I'd like to ask for a stair workout app, too. Thanks.

I'm not planning to create one app for every possible activity that someone may wish to do. I'm working on a single app where the user can select the activity type and activity sub-type and record a workout. The list of activity types and sub-types I'm expecting to support can be seen here. Initially it will probably display the elapsed time only, but I plan to provide data field support and allow the user to select up to 4 data pages and what fields are on each page (just like the native activity apps for each device, but I may add/drop a few data fields).

If you can, allow us to manually input calories, or avg heart rate so it calculates calories.

I can provide the necessary user interface to allow users to manually input calories or average heart rate, but that doesn't do any good; there is no way for me to insert that data into the FIT file that is uploaded to Garmin Connect.

It could be just one app, but you can't have just one app that has several different names in the menu. As I said, I'm planning to make a single app that allows the user to select the activity type (almost exactly like your device already allows, except I'm expecting to support more activity types natively).
  • Travis, I look forward to the app you are planning to create. I looked on the link and there are several choices that I would be able to pick to provide better logging for my activities. :)
  • I'll take whatever you can make for us. I'm just excited to get something for those other activities. Thanks for doing it!

    I second this please
  • Would love this APP!

    Thanks, would be great :)

    Please also provide Activity-Type SAILING.
  • Incidentally... I just made a detailed specifically for sailing for a user for an EPIX

but anyways - i digress.. the app from travis is already live on the app store. likely you are on the wrong thread. Go look up the recorder app
