Swim Rest Timer Field & Active Swimming Time Field?

I just went for my first swim today and was surprised (though I shouldn't have been after the DCRainmaker comment about it) that there's no swim rest timer. (It's also really annoying that the "Hold to Stop Activity" message covers the screen during your rest times and it stops the clock from updating until you dismiss the message.)

Can some write a swim rest timer field?

Also, there's only elapsed time from start of activity, but no timer to show how long your intervals are (i.e. elapsed time less rest time). And yet, it's right there when I go into Training Peaks (synced from GC).

So, also, an active swim time timer?

Thanks!
  • What device are you using?

Wait. Nevermind. You have a Vivoactive....
  • I think this might be kinda difficult because ConnectIQ doesn't seem to provide information about laps, lengths, rest or interval times. The watch may know that you've stopped swimming, but as far as I can tell, that information isn't passed on to ConnectIQ data fields. This page describes the information that is available to a data field.

That said, someone could write a full-blown application that did some of this stuff, but I'm not exactly sure how that would turn out. Unless they wrote a complete swim application including all of the existing data fields, you'd lose functionality. I'm assuming that it would be difficult to implement all of that within the 64KB memory restriction put on an app. So at best you're looking at some sort of compromise.

My question is, what happens if you setup a data field that is the Lap Time and the Last Lap Time. After you start your rest period, does the device show your interval time under the Last Lap Time and the rest interval under Lap Time? This is how you used to have to do it with a 910XT, so I wouldn't be surprised if it worked that way with the Vivoactive.

It's definitely a mistake for them not to include rest time. And to have that pop up "Push button to stop" thing pausing the clock on the screen every few seconds. That's really going to turn off a lot of swimmers from the Vivoactive, I would think.

Amazing that a swimming rest time doesn't exist!

This is the only flaw that gives me grief with my vivoactive. It should be pretty simple to implement considering the garmin swim watch has it.

Any chance of it being nudged up the wish list for a future release?

    Thanks

Thank you so much whoever at Garmin made sure this was in the last release. It is so nice to have a rest timer. Thanks again.

Next stop stroke detection or am I pushing my luck!!!

Has something changed in release 4.4? The rest timer in the swim app seems to have disappeared. Has anyone else noticed this problem please?
