App: Remote display

The idea is to be able to use a device as an extended display for another device. The app would run on the extended display and would behave as though it was a Varia Vision display using the recently announced extended display ANT+ protocol.

For example the athlete has a Fenix 5 and an Edge device, and wants to use the Edge device as an extended display for the Fenix 5 which is used to log all activities.

An app like this might also provide a motivation for Garmin to implement the extended display protocol across a wider range of devices.
  • I really can't see a way this could be done in Connect IQ. This is something that's best done in the firmware.

    You can suggest it here:

I've already suggested it there but it occurred to me that it is about communicating via ANT+, albeit a complex interaction, and rendering the data from that communication. This app successfully tackles a similar challenge setting up ANT FE-C communication with another device.
  • The chances of any already released Edge device being retrofitted with capability to support the ANT+ Extended Display Device profile is effectively nil, and I'd say creating a Connect‑IQ app for it as “[providing] motivation for Garmin to implement” it on either current or future Edge device models is an ***-backwards idea.

First Garmin needs to identify the class of devices on which such a feature (as part and parcel of the value proposition) will drive up sales and tap into a (segment of the) market that wouldn't otherwise be so forthcoming to hand over money. Then it needs to enjoy some period of exclusivity but also strict control of what can/will be displayed and what won't. After a while, to further milk the idea yet again, it can be opened up to Connect‑IQ. That's how I think it'll pan out (if it ever does).

Well, i think there will be enough competition the next days in kinds of smart remote displays and smart phone or other improved inter device communications.

The cooperation with e.g. komoot and garmin seems to be canceled, but others join like Ciclo "Hac1" or Wahoo "Element". Garmins own step to get into competition again and not loose Edge market would be to patch the Remote Display Ant profile and or cast it to the small Edge devices e.g. 25 when casting from premium devices like Fenix.

here are some nice videos from other vendors:

and even a BLE Connect SDK:

So stopping innovation in the premium market segment would definitely shift the market.

If there is sufficient demand for it, and other manufacturers implement extended displays (yeah okay too many ifs), Garmin would likely prefer that people would use their devices as extended displays rather than those of their competitors.

PS: Such an app might also encourage more Fenix 3/HR owners to get a Fenix 5/5s/5X/FR935XT

An Edge 25-sized device with the functionality of a Varia Vision would be a very nice companion to a Fenix 5/5s/5X/FR735XT/FR935XT. I would buy one with a 935 if the price was right. It would be interesting to know the size of the market for such a device. At Varia Vision prices I suspect the market is quite small but at Edge 25 prices...?

Extended display capability would also be a good feature on a device like the Edge Touring which has navigation but no performance features, so there would be the least possible overlap of functionality with the wearable, but the best integration, so meaning good battery life. The slight problem with this is that from what I have read, the Edge Touring is quite buggy :(

Not so. There is Remote Display Mode in the latest Edge Beta. I think they took up my suggestion.

    interesting.
does that take over only the data or does this also replicate the complete visuals (eg when running a connect iq field on the forerunner).

  • I hope that remote display mode makes it to the Edge 520..... wonder why it's only the 820 so far....
