Lone sport injury detector

Hi all,

I'm a firefighter and when we wear breathing apparatus we have a thing called a bodyguard (Google dräger bodyguard) which constantly monitors our stats like air supply and breathing rate. It also detects our movement and if we stay still for 30 seconds, we get an audible warning which will turn off if we move but if we stay still for a further 10 seconds a loud alarm will sound and can not be turned off until we are outside the building and put a tally inside the unit. This is so people know we have been static for a long period of time and are likely to be in danger.

I am now wondering if something similar can be done for the garmin watches software or an app which runs whilst you do a live track activity. I do a lot of mountain biking alone and I tend to be rather silly sometimes and I have injured myself a lot. What I was thinking was have something that detects movement and rather than detecting a sudden movement and translating that into a crash, it will detect no movement and issue a warning which can be cleared via the watch, if the warning is not cleared then another warning gets sent to the live track contact informing them of the users non movement and location and they can then either attempt to contact them or go looking for them.

Can this be done?

Thank you for reading, hopefully it makes sense.

Thanks for your service. It takes some cajones to run INTO a burning building.

Didn't you post for a similar app in another of the forums? The issue I see here is that how does the phone know when you're not in cell coverage? It would have to know somehow as you approach the deadspot that you are approaching it and then shoot off a message. Otherwise, people would only get your message once you got back in range and then who knows how accurate that would be.

Sorry, I don't think I explained it very well. I'm thinking of something that if I fall and seriously hurt myself, for example, knock myself unconscious, my watch would detect a lack of movement and send a warning via the live track to whoever I want informing them of my potential injury. They can then attempt to call or whatever.

No, I think you explained it very well. My point is that if you are truly using it for mtb, it won't help you if you are remote enough to be out of cell coverage.
I think this could help inside a urban type setting where you know you will have cell coverage.

In the meantime, look at this:

This is an awesome idea, as long as you have cellular signal, it would be a great feature to have..
  • Something like this is on Edge devices. It's really something that needs to be in the firmware and not CIQ, unless you wanted a full blown CIQ app for each sport you do. (and possibly a companion phone app)

Try submitting the idea to garmin for the FW on your device:

It would be nice for GC to have an emergency contact option incase of a serious injury or something.

This idea is really a good one, This would actually make me feel more comfortable on some of the crazy trails I go on with my MTB.
You never know what can happen out there??

The issue is not with how you've explained it at all.

Fundamentally, you expressed wanting to leverage LiveTrack for something for which it is not designed. That goes far beyond the domain of Connect‑IQ and even companion apps (on Android and/or iOS) that someone can develop.

The assumption that someone you invite to see your timed activity by way of LiveTrack may have an interest in how you're doing (including your physical safety) is reasonable, I suppose, but assuming that LiveTrack would act as a conduit for unsolicited and/or ongoing ‘push’ notifications to the invitees (once the activity is on the way, and after the initial ‘invites’ have been sent) wouldn't be, even though in the particular use case you described it wouldn't exactly be spam. Garmin is in no position to actually vet the validity, legitimacy or importance of every message you want to send via its LiveTrack platform and (effectively) using the company's name and communications channels, so I don't think it's going to happen.

Thanks for mentioning that. It didn't allow me to pinpoint what you were talking about at the time, but my memory was jogged when someone posted a question about the feature in question in the forum today.

A feature of that nature, called Incident Detection, has already been implemented, if you want to buy one of the Garmin bicycle computer models that support it today.

Not for watches, not using Connect‑IQ, and not as an extension of LiveTrack. Nevertheless, it's something that as a MTB enthusiast you can buy in the name of your hobby (or safety).
  • Yes Smug, it's a FW thing on the edge devices!

Even if a CIQ DF could detect it, CIQ DF's have no contact with the outside world (no comm access), so the DF couldn't tell anyone. It needs to be a FW thing... Or a full blown watch-app for a given sport which can do comm...
