Stair Stepper Data Fields Idea:

Is it possible to change the data input for the Stair Stepper?

1. Add a field for the number of floors climbed (even if this is a manual input by the user).

2. Change the data of number of feet climbed by manual input (like the distance for Indoor Rowing) rather than scrolling from 0 to over 1000.

The manual input in data fields is virtually non existent on watches. So you wouldn't be able to edit the numbers in a user friendly way. The best would be to edit it as "settings" from the Connect IQ app during or before the activity and save it as a session field to the fit file.

But it would be a custom fit field. CIQ datafield can't override the main, official floors climbed, elevation climbed fields.

I was also annoyed by this and wrote (had AI write) a datafield doing exactly that :) It also tracks elevation if you select the correct stair stepper: https://apps-developer.garmin.com/apps/30377823-88b4-4361-bde1-089828118ae2 - works great on my fenix 8. of course, the watch must be able to detect cadence (so if you keep your hands steady, that likely won't work)

Does it mean that you're able to record to native fields and Garmin Connect displays them?

Can I use it without ANT, just by setting custom step height and use it on my real steps with a watch that doesn't have barometer?

hm yeah seams the writing to garmins field does not work :/ i‘ll write them to an own datafield so one can at least copy it from there and doesn’t need to convert them to garmin steps/floors and calc the elevation.

yes - it works just by counting steps (cadence) - no baro needed. Elev is calced out of total steps times the step height.

But you won't get any of the "benefits" you would if it was saved to the native fields, so it just gives you a visual during the activity and some kind of logbook when you look into the recorded custom fields.

True - the benefit is, that you can edit the activity afterwards and use the numbers provided by the datafield (vs calc them yourself). That works - and also counts against the step challenges
