Windsurfing activity

Hey wizards,

Sorry but my english is not so good.........

I'm not a programmer so my wish is to have a windsurfing activity, i know there are a lot of guy's searching for something like this!!
I tried to find a lot of info and data...

Session data
When calculating the session statistics it is important to comply to the following rules:
- One best per run
- Linear Speed. (Linear speed means that you calculate the speed over the exact positions a rider has sailed)
- No interpolation of distance speeds

GPS Track Setup: 0.5 or 1 Second
Interval: The interval is set to 0.5 or 1 Second (0.5 is the best and more accurate)

A session consists of (is it possible to see this on screen?) :
- Max GPS - Highest speed seen on the display of the GPS
- Max 2 sec speed - Gps Highest speed over 2 seconds
- Max Software - Software calculated highest speed
- 10 sec run - Software calculated average speed over 10 seconds (the AVG for the ranking is calculated over the 5x 10 sec runs)
- 100m - Software calculated average speed over ‘one’ run of minimal 100 meters
- 250m - Software calculated average speed over ‘one’ run of minimal 250 meters
- 500m - Software calculated average speed over ‘one’ run of minimal 500 meters
- 1852m - Software calculated average speed over ‘one’ run of minimal 1852 meters (Nautical Mile), turn allowed*
- Alpha racing – Software calculated speed over ‘one’ run of 500 meters with a gybe and a proximity at the startpoint of 50 meters.
- 3600s - Software calculated average speed over 3600 seconds
- Distance - Distance sailed during a session
- And hart reate, calories, Hs-Zone etc

Please send the data via the automatic upload function in the software. This prevents making mistakes. Do not forget to fill in the Max GPS as this is used by the Timekeepers to check against the software calculated speeds.

A run is when you sail in one direction and per run you can score only one speed. A new run begins after a turn (gybe or tack) or when you have stopped. The only exceptions are the Nautical Mile and one Hour speeds where turns are allowed.

A valid run has no spikes and no strange accelerations. If a spike occurs at the end of a run (because of a crash) the spike may be deleted and the run can count as a valid run.

For Doppler devices in the GPS analysis software the following settings are necessary:
- max. Accel. [3 m/s²]
- max. HDoP (5)
- min. Sats (5)

Track format
A track must be delivered at the discretion of the RTK in the next name format: YYYYMMDD Rider Location.gpx or the Navi generated filename is also ok. Please make sure you have your Username set correctly in the Navi.

When you have deleted spikes in a copy of the original file than add ‘cleaned’ to the file name. (example: 061205 John Doe The Spot Cleaned.gpx).

Only tracks in GPX or SBN/SBP format with minimum of 6 digits precision are allowed.

Extra info (i know that it is for Suunto but maybe it helps) :

5X10S MAX AVG
WINDSURFEN/SURFEN, TRAINING
Calculates the 5x10sec MAX AVG like the GT-31 does. There is only one best 10sec average per run. A run is finished if either the speed drops below 8 knots or the GPS heading turns more than 70 degrees within 4 seconds. It also beeps whenever the 10s MAX improves. When the speed is over 8 knots, then it shows the current speed in knots, otherwise it alternates between 2s MAX, 10s MAX and 5x10s MAX AVG in a 3 second interval. Ambit (size 100%), Ambit2 S (size 48%), Ambit2 (size 48%).

I hope I have given you enough information for making this activity, I really hope that someone want to create this!

    I'll do one that shows:

    - Max 2s
    - Max 10s (and all 5 best 10s)
    - Max 5x10s average
    - 10s of the last leg/run

One version is a data field for that shows the last 10s only, one data field that shows 2s, 10s, 5x10s alternatingly. After that I thought I'll do a Windsurfing/Kiting activity that shows those numbers in a better way than data fields can do.
  • Thanks for posting. I'll move this over to the app idea sub-forum. :)

That would be terrific. Would love a Kiting activity myself (Gamin call it an "application" I think). So far I have been using the inbuilt paddling app renamed kitesurfing. While it does a great job of the GPS track, it way overstates the calories because SUPs dont get along at 30kts! Not that they are really important. Just wondering if when you make a new activity application, is it a simple step to tweak the calorie burn rate?

Here is a picture from the current version of the windsurfing datafield. If used in a 1 field layout, then it looks like that:

    http://chumba.ch/images/garminapp.jpg

I still need to optimize for readability. The datafield also shows the 10s of the last leg/run after a turn for 20 seconds. If going more than 36 km/h then it shows the speed with the number thai hot font. After testing I found that very handy.

In other layouts it shows the 2s, 10s and 5x10s averages alternatingly every 3 seconds. It also works with the vivoactive and epix, but the vivoactive doesn't save .fit files with 1-sec recording. So it can be a helper only.

The other one shows the 5 best 10s averages. The colored bars just show how close they are to each other. The greener the better :). It works much better than my Ambit versions so far!
  • the vivoactive doesn't save .fit files with 1-sec recording.

Are you saying that your data fields compute() method is not called once a second on the vivoactive?

I was told several times by Garmin staff that the data field method would be called approximately every second and that my data fields need not go through the trouble of calculating elapsed time. This is concerning.

I'm sorry for the confusion. compute() and also onUpdate() is called every second on the vivoactive. The display of the speed stats works as well as on the fr920xt. It is just that the final resulting .fit file from the vivoactive contains records between 2-6 seconds and not very second. The vivoactive can be used the check the speed stats on the water, but you would need another GPS with you that can record every 1 second.
  • I'll do one that shows:

    - Max 2s
    - Max 10s (and all 5 best 10s)
    - Max 5x10s average
    - 10s of the last leg/run

This is really great super that you for taking this initiative to. I hope they can adapt so that the gps can be measured every second. This should first be approved by Garmin before it can be used?

I like the Forerunner 920XT a lot! The display is very easy to read on the water and in the sun. I can see numbers a lot better than with the Ambit while windsurfing.

There is no problem with the Forerunner 920XT: It has GPS updates every second and also saves them into .FIT files every second. The .FIT files can be uploaded to www.ka72.com directly and loaded into GPSResults directly. So I'm very happy with this. The numbers in the watch matches very well with the resulting numbers from the analysis software.

I think I can upload the apps to the Garmin App Store next week. They are ready but I just have to take some screenshots and write some description.

Currently just the vivoactive (another Garmin watch) has a problem. It updates GPS every second and displays numbers correctly every second, but the .FIT files contain information every 2-6 seconds. This is because it is using smart recording.

(This is the same answer as in the seabreeze forum).
  • The Forerunner 920XT is indeed a great watch and I also use it for mountain biking and swimming. And it's even better that the gps update every second is great, so it's just accurate as the GT31!! Can't wait to go on the water to test this application and this brings even more fun on the water!!
