[REQUEST / IDEA] tracking sports with shifts on VAHR

Hello there,

I did not find anything on connectIQ and I'm then asking here. I'm looking for an app capable to track one's activity during a shift-based sport (I'm thinking about hockey or floorball) on a vivoactive HR
I do not want to use autopause because no data is recorded during bench times.
I was thinking about an autolap based on pace, or another metrics which could differentiate between an active shift and bench time, where each shift and bench period will be recorded as separated laps.
Since it's very well possible to have a little idle period during an active shift (icing, scored goal, ...) the pace should stay at 0 for some time (say 20 seconds) for the lap to be recorded, and ideally the last 20 seconds should go in the new lap instead of the previous one.

Well, I hope I managed to clearly explain my idea.
It's possible that I try myself on that with the SDK, but if someone has the know-how (I need to learn from scratch) and the time to try it, or can point me in the right direction it could spare me some time :)

Cheers!
  • When you say 'shift-based sport', I'm assuming you mean some sport where you spend some time sitting on the bench and then rotated in as your skills are needed (american football, basketball, hockey, or soccer), right? And you want to build an app to track both your on and off-field time, but you want it to automatically detect whether you are on-field or off-field?

Making an app that tracks time splits (on vs off-field time) would be easy, but it would require you press a button when you were substituted in. It might be possible to auto-detect when you are on-field by looking at incoming data (position, speed) data (similar to how auto-pause works), but it will likely be inaccurate in many situations (consider that a hockey goalie may be nearly still for minutes at a time). Even if you could auto-detect this, if it takes 20 seconds to do so there is no way to insert a lap event into the data stream 20 seconds in the past.

    Hello Travis,

    thanks for your reply.
    You got my idea right.

Using a button to mark the shifts does not really need a dedicated app. The standard running app would very well do the job if you manually enter the lap marks :)
I would then favor an automatic detection, even if I'm very well aware that it could be not that accurate, considering borderline and special situations. The idea of letting 20 seconds of bench time pass before entering a lap "in the past" was just a fancy though to improve said accuracy but I don't really know the SDK possibilities.

    Cheers!
