Shading in watchfaces

I've been looking around for watchfaces that include shading to see how they look on the Memory In Pixel displays and stumbled across this one

Game in Colors by Garmin

Aside from this one being particularly illegible due to the colors on the MIP displays, I love the depth a shading gives the face.  Do developers ever consider this sort of shading on fonts?  I would love to see some depth on numbers and whatnot.  Can Garmin do some sort of howto blog post on how they achieved the shading on this watchface?

I'm curious to know if someone has tried to see how black or colored numbers would look shaded on a white background watchface

  • I assume you mean the shadow gradient down the middle of the watchface?

The simplest approach is just to have the shadow as part of a static bitmap that you draw as the background layer—that's my guess what they did in this case. All of the text simply looks drawn on top of the background.
