Edge controlling Varia taillight?

When cycling with friends I need to change mode if I am in front or rear in a safe way. I want to be seen by traffic when in rear and shut off when in front not to blinding the cyclists behind.
Today I need to press 10 times on the touch screen on the Edge1000 to toggle the taillight and go back... Not safe at all.

-Is it possible to make a data field that shows mode of taillight and have soft buttons for switching between modes in a safe way?
  • This sounds like a great idea, but there are currently two major obstacles to making this happen. First, the ANT+ Bike Lights Device Profile exists, but isn't available to the public yet. You have to be an ANT+ Annual Member ($1500/year) to be legally acquire the specification. Theoretically, someone could reverse engineer the necessary protocol bits, but it would not be something most developers are able to pull off. Second, a data field does not have facilities for accepting user input. A full-blown app or a widget could *probably* do it, but the edge devices only support data fields at this time.

I think this is something that you should propose as an enhancement to the existing Edge device firmware.
  • I support the request for this function!
It only needs a button on the touch on / off in the semi-transparency on the various data pages, as is already happening for the direction arrows when you create a network with two Varia taillight.
I report too as an idea in the next firmware.
  • I'm not sure a ticket is necessary. It would be much more useful if the specification was made public...
  • Just bought a TL 300 and had the same problem, I've developed this data field that lets you switch on/off the tail light. The light network need to be in auto, high visibility, trail or other modes but not "individual".

Please let me know if it works for you.
