Is it possible to add step count to cycling?

I can add cadence using a foot pod or a cadence sensor to a cycling activity, but only the watch movement will add to the step count. I can only think the step count could be changed by strapping it to someone’s leg, but that’s not practical.

I realize that insurance companies don’t want people creating inflated step numbers, but using a watch instead of a foot pod to create inflated step numbers is no different other than being more obvious. Yes cycling is also different than walking, but so is running, inline skating, cross country skiing, rowing, elliptical machines, driving on rough roads, washing dishes, or any other watch movement that is counted as steps.

If step count should not be changed because it’s not technically steps, then Garmin Connect should change to something more universal like intensity minutes for people that have heart rate monitors.

  • A lot of the badges rely on a good step count, 300,000K in any particular month or 100,000K for half the month, setting up a target for 10K steps a day for your 60 day badge (8 points) are really hard to get when you sit in an office.  If you decide to train on your bike when you get home on any particular day you could loose all that and yet be fitter at the end of it.  I have a cadence monitor on my bike so it knows how many times my feet turn and push.
