As The Crow Fly's Navigator

How about a simple arrow that points to your Destination or waypoint. So maybe you put in a destination to start the navigation and then a simple page with an arrow points in the direction of the destination with a distance as the crow fly's.

This is similar in principle to some hardware devices that are coming to the cycling market place but as a Garmin owner why do I need another piece of hardware. Ideally I'd like to reuse the hardware I already have on my handlebars.
  • What device are you using? I ask simply because many of the Garmin devices have this functionality already. For instance, the fr630 has a Locations menu and the fr920xt has a Navigation menu that allow you to go to a previously saved location.

You say that you'd like to be able to put in a destination. Are you talking about entering GPS coordinates on the device, via Garmin Connect Mobile or Garmin Express, or are you thinking of something else? I suppose I could allow you to enter an address and look it up via a web service, assuming I can find one that would allow that without registration.

Now that there is a portable way to get user input on a device, it seems like it wouldn't be all that difficult to do this. I have an app skeleton laying around that was my initial attempt at this, but the vivoactive didn't have a good way to do user input and I didn't want to write it from scratch for that device.

  • Hi. Thanks for you reply.

I have an EDGE 1000. I know that right now these do not use ConnectIQ but my understanding is that ConnectIQ is coming soon.

So this morning I went for a ride from London to Brighton. I used Garmin connect on my laptop to create a rough map which I uploaded to the edge. I was able to use the navigation to take me to Brighton.

It would be really good to be able todo this mid journey i.e. using garmin connect on my android and upload wherever I am.

    I found this.

And my point being lets use the Garmin device we already have rather than yet another piece of hardware.

  • The edge_1000 has a full navigation system. You can navigate to an address, coordinate, a projected location, and more with the built-in software. Is this actually of any use on that device?
  • Hi.

So the EDGE 1000 is brilliant and will navigate you turn by turn if you want.

But what if you just want to go on an adventure and 'drift' in the right direction. This is the purpose of just a 'big arrow'. When I'm cycling (and car actually) I want to go where I feel but just want to keep heading in the right direction. This is how good routes are found rather than just relying on what the route has selected.
