Track "Daily Steps", excluding running activity, toward a daily goal

Instead of counting all steps taken (which varies widely with different run distances each day), I want to see only what Garmin refers to as Daily Steps measured against a daily goal. These are non-activity steps taken just walking around the house and such each day. These are already tracked separately. On Garmin Connect, go to Steps. Then click the Activity tab.

I'd like a widget which shows Daily Steps as a percentage of a manual or automated goal. I would think this would have wide appeal to all runners who also want to live less sedentary lifestyles and don't want running steps to blow the goal out of the water.
  • Those "daily steps" are the same steps that is running + walking + whatever other steps that are taken on a daily basis.
Thats' what i'm seeing on my status.

what makes you think that they are different?

Go to Garmin Connect on your PC. Click the three parallel bars. Then click Steps. Scroll down to where there are more tabs and Click Activities. Mine shows "Daily Steps" and one timed activity, which was a 14-mile run. If you hover over the ? it says: "Daily Steps includes all the information from your activity tracker except your timed activities which are listed separately."

My timed activity shows 23,320 steps. Daily Steps shows 4,881. It's the 4,881 that I want to have tracked against a daily goal. My timed activity steps vary widely from day to day to be meaningful.

I want to lead a less sedentary life, even though I run. Please see: http://www.runnersworld.com/health/sitting-is-the-new-smoking-even-for-runners.
  • I responded to your original here on the FR235 thread k think.

    Can't do it.
  • I hear your response, but I just wanted to make sure that you understood that the data field [Daily Steps] does exist separate from ALL steps, which includes timed activities. I guess my only hope is that Garmin will at some point decide to make this tracking option available. I feel sure it would be useful to many runners who also want to walk more. Until then, I'll just rely on the "Move" prompt to get me moving at least once per hour.

    Thanks for reading and responding!
  • I am really not aware that on the SDK actually have such a delineation of daily steps vs walk/run activist separation.

I may be wrong - but I don't see it.

I recently bought the 920xt and, after reading this thread, noticed that my Garmin Connect (on my pc) does NOT split out the daily steps for timed activities vs. non-timed activities. When I click on Steps and then Activities as you suggest, my "Daily Steps" shows 20,953 and no steps are separately listed for my swim (2900 yds) or run (9 miles) today. But when I click on the Step Details tab, I can see that the 20,953 steps include my run and swim. Plus, I know that I definitely did NOT walk 20,953 steps. So, that message when you hover over the ? does not seem to apply to me. Any idea how I can fix this and have the steps for timed activities display separately from non-timed activities? Thanks.
  • I'd like to see this ability as well. Should be built into the watch as an option to toggle on or off per app.

Oddly the walk or running app doesn't list steps as a data field which you would think could be done? Would be nice on the walk app.

I don't have a data field that does that, but I do have it on one of the standard screens of my hiking/outdoor walking app as well as my indoor walking app, and it's actually quite simple to do and could be done as a datafield.

All it's got to do is get the watch's step count when it starts, and then as you go, take the current step count and subtract from that, the starting steps.

What watch do you have? Some devices have "steps" as a data field, but it may be daily steps and not steps while in an activity.

Thanks for the reply. Fenix 3. I did find a few data fields in connectiq that seem to work though and I think will do the trick.

Doesn't seem to be a built in one on the f3 in any of the pre loaded activities that I can find.
